Is your refrigerator overflowing with foods that don’t belong there? Maybe you heard that it keeps them fresh, or your parents always put that item in there. There are many reasons we store food in the refrigerator, but now it is time to clear it out. Here are five foods that you should not put in your refrigerator.

Onions

Onions will go bad quicker in the refrigerator because of the moisture. Instead, keep them in a well-ventilated area to stay crunchy.

Coffee

Storing coffee in the fridge will not let the natural oil flavor your cuppa joe, so keep the jar in a cupboard instead.

Garlic

Garlic can actually become moldy and change texture when stored in the refrigerator, so it is best to keep it in a well-ventilated area free from moisture.

Olive Oil

Olive oil will solidify if refrigerated, so keep it in the pantry for easy access and to keep it at optimal texture and temperature.

Bananas

Keep your bananas out of the refrigerator if you want them to ripen quicker, and the skin will stay yellow.

Bananas are a staple of so many people’s diets, but they can seem a little boring. Here are three ways to try them in a more exciting way.

Super Simple Banana Milkshake

This is a really easy and healthy way to produce milkshake-like results. Just slice up some bananas and add to a large jug with a cup of your favorite milk. You can also add some cinnamon or nutmeg if you like. Use an immersion blender to blitz this up until the banana has dissolved into the milk. Pour into a glass and enjoy!

With Nut Butter on Toast

This is a simple idea with incredible results. Just top some toast with your choice of nut butter, and then slice some banana to add to this. You can drizzle over some maple syrup for extra decadence if you like, or enjoy as is.

As a Healthy Popsicle

This is a fun way to get some fruit in. Take a peeled banana and push a popsicle stick into the end. Dip this into some melted chocolate and leave on some baking paper to set. Pop these into the freezer and remove when you want a cold treat.

Butter is a staple ingredient in most baking recipes, especially cakes and muffins. But what happens if you run out of butter or you are a vegan—what alternatives can you use that will give your dish a great texture and delicious taste? There are actually plenty to try, and here are three of the best.

Oil

Coconut oil and olive oil are great butter alternatives when it comes to baking. They will give cakes a moist texture and you won’t need to take time to melt anything. The olive oil should be high quality, so it doesn’t overpower other flavors. And beware of coconut oil, and the taste of coconut tens to flavor the food slightly.

Applesauce

When cooking with applesauce, try to use the unsweetened variety. Use the same ratio 1:1 for butter to applesauce in a recipe and you won’t taste the difference.

Banana

Mashed bananas work just as well as butter—they’ll give your cake a denser texture and add some fruity flavor. Just convert the amount of butter to the number of mashed bananas equally and you will have yourself a delicious muffin.

Did you notice that your bananas are looking a little less than their best? Congrats—they’re at the perfect stage to be turned into something delicious! Just because they are slightly on the soft side, does not mean they need to go to waste. Here are three ways to give your overripe bananas new life.

Banana Bread

Let’s start with the classics, shall we? Back in 2020, when the world was in lockdown, just about everyone was trying their hand at baking banana bread. It may be two years later, but our feelings about banana bread remain the same—it’s delicious. For extra indulgence, toast a slice and spread some butter on it.

Banana Tarte Tatin

A traditional tarte tatin is made using apples, but bananas are just as delicious. The French upside-down tart involves making caramel and using puff pastry as the base. One bit of this and you’ll forget that apples even exist!

When one thinks about the word “mushy”, it’s not exactly an appetizing thought. Foods that are mushy aren’t just gross to look at and feel—they sometimes indicate that the food is spoiled in some way. However, there are actually some cases in which having mushy food can be beneficial in the kitchen. Here are two awesome examples of food that sometimes need to be mushy in order to enjoy.

Avocado

Avocados are a strange beast, and yet very delicious all the same. Everyone knows that if they’re too hard, they can’t be eaten, or at the very least enjoyed. Once they get to a certain point of mushiness, however, they can be sliced and scooped to be placed into a sandwich, or more commonly mashed up into guacamole. Then again, if they’re too mushy, there’s a chance the avocado might’ve gone bad, so it’s best to find that sweet spot.

Banana

There’s nothing like a tasty, solid banana to brighten your day. But if you’re bananas go unchecked and uneaten for too long, they’ll start to develop spots and get mushy. Luckily, this isn’t really a bad thing, because mushy bananas are the perfect ingredient when making banana cake!

Banana bread is the perfect delightful food. It’s delicious, feels appropriate to eat for breakfast, dessert, or as a snack, and you can even convince yourself that you’re eating something healthy because of the high banana content (potassium anyone?). Here, we’ve put together a vegan banana bread recipe for you that is a great way to use up those overripe bananas that have been hanging out in your freezer for the past few months. Check it out below.

Ingredients

  • 4 bananas
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 non-dairy milk (Choose your favorite. We like oat milk!)
  • 1/2 cup brown sufar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Directions

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a loaf pan with vegan butter, vegetable oil, or nonstick cooking spray, whatever you prefer. In a large bowl, mash up your bananas. (If they were frozen, let them thaw first. It’ll make your life way easier.) To the mashed bananas, add brown sugar, oil, vanilla, and almond milk. Whisk until combined.

Now, mix in the flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Stir until combined but not too much, as that can mess with the texture of your banana. Pour the batter into your pan. You can add toppings here if you want, but this recipe is delicious even without them. Bake for 45 minutes to an hour, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out mostly clean.

In nearly every good smoothie shop, you’ll probably see banana on the menu in most of the available drinks. You probably also know by conventional wisdom that it’s just a good ingredient to have in your own smoothies. But what makes it so good? There are lots of reasons having a smoothie with a banana every day is a good idea, and here’s what they are.

Its Texture

Banana has a very unique texture that allows it to be rather creamy when it’s blended up. So adding banana to the base of your smoothie will add creaminess and thickness without adding fat like actual cream would do.

It’s Healthy

Bananas have lots of nutrients and are a great thing to add to your daily diet for this reason. In particular, they contain lots of potassium, which is not only important for bones and strength but reduces inflammation and soreness. So if you have a tough workout, the best thing you can drink to help feel less sore is a smoothie with banana.

It’s Cheap

Bananas are some of the cheapest fruit, clocking in usually at only a few cents per unit. Because of this, it won’t break the bank to buy enough to eat one every day the way it might to buy peaches or berries.
