We’re all just modern-day superheroes trying to get everything done at once, right? But when it comes to cooking, some shortcuts do more harm than good. So, before you reach for that prepackaged solution, consider these five common cooking hacks to avoid (unless sad veggies and excess MSG are your thing, that is).

Prepackaged Spice Blends

Sure, those pre-made spice mixes promise to add flavor in a flash, but they often come loaded with extra salt, preservatives, and who knows what else? Level up your seasoning game by opting for fresh herbs and spices – you won’t regret it.

Pre-Chopped Vegetables

It’s tempting to grab a bag of pre-chopped veggies for a quick stir-fry, but they’re often lacking in freshness and flavor. Take a few extra minutes to chop your own veggies for a meal that’s both satisfying and visually appealing.

Instant Flavor Enhancers

MSG-laden powdered soup mixes might add a burst of flavor, but they also come with a side of mystery ingredients. Get creative with natural flavor boosters like citrus zest and homemade broths.

Canned Sauces

When you’re in a hurry, canned sauces seem like a lifesaver. But let’s not ignore the sodium overload and artificial additives lurking inside. Opt for homemade versions or read labels carefully to find lower sodium options.

Pre-Made Doughs

While it’s tempting to skip the hassle of making dough from scratch, pre-made options often contain additives and preservatives. Channel your inner pastry chef and whip up your own dough for a homemade touch.

Coming home after a long day of work to find that you forgot to defrost the chicken breast meant for dinner has to be one of life’s major frustrations. Here you are starving, with a frozen piece of chicken, and very little patience.

Now what?

The good news is, there is a way to thaw that fillet in under 30 minutes before the hanger takes over (you know what we’re talking about).

You want to start with a relatively thin chicken breast that has been deboned and had its skin removed. An inch or less is ideal as this will allow it to defrost quickly. The same method can be used for other cuts of meat as long as it is a width of 1 inch or thinner.

Step #1

Take a ziploc bag and place the chicken pieces inside.

Step #2

Pour hot tap water into a bowl and check the temperature. You are aiming for 140°F.

Step #3

Place the Ziploc bag in the water until it is fully submerged. You want to stir the water every so often. The chicken should take around 30 minutes to thaw out.

Eggs don’t get enough credit. The little guys are one of the most versatile ingredients in the kitchen. They feature in cakes, custards, crumbed chicken, and sauces… and don’t forget just whipping yourself up an omelette or plate of scrambled eggs when you need a quick late-night dinner. These little hacks will make it even easier to get the most outta your eggs.

Get Baked

If a recipe calls for several hard-boiled eggs, you are probably going to need a large pot to cook them all. Or… you can just pop them into the oven. Preheat the oven to 325°F and bake the eggs in a muffin tin for 22-27 minutes, depending on how hard you’d like them to be. Once done, transfer them into an ice bath to cool for 5 minutes.

Get Chopped

Egg salad, whether on its own or on a sandwich, is a classic. But it does involve a lot of chopping. Except, you can actually squish the eggs through a wire rack and have them chopped in no time.

Get Yolked

That’s not the only way to utilize a wire rack. Even the most seasoned of bakers can have a hard time separating egg yolks from their whites. Instead of juggling about, place a wire rack over a bowl and crack the eggs over it. The white should run through the rack while the yellows stay whole above.

Soup and stews are perfect for winter. Not only are they delicious, but will also get you a bit warmer and make it easier to survive the cold weather. That is, of course, if you don’t lose your appetite because of all that grease floating on top.

More often than not, your soup or stew will have some excess grease accumulated on top. While this doesn’t mean anything is wrong with it, some people can be slightly turned off by this occurrence. If you are one of them, you’ll be happy to know that there is a simple hack that can take care of this issue in a heartbeat.

Hack for De-Greasing Soups, Stews, and Sauces

The de-greasing hack was shared by TikTok’s favorite grandma Barbara Costello aka @brunchwithbabs. In a clip posted on the popular social media platform, Costello takes a stainless steel ladle and fills it with ice. She then sets in on top of her greasy sauce, and the magic starts happening. The grease gets attracted by cold and sticks on the outside of the ladle, where it can be easily removed with a paper towel.

@brunchwithbabs

You will never have to worry about greasy sauce or gravy again!!! #motherlyadvice #grandmasoftiktok #grandmatips

The hack quickly became viral, being viewed almost nine million times and receiving 755K likes. The comment section was also filled with testimonies of other users who tried Costello’s hack and said it worked like a charm. So make sure to try it yourself if you don’t want grease living rent free on top of your soup.

Removing that Annoying Tendon in Chicken

If you’ve ever had to make a chicken breast tender, you’re likely familiar with that annoying bit of white cartilage in the meat. The easiest way to remove the tendon is to place a fork around it, get a grip by using a paper towel, and pull! The tendon will come out in one long piece.

Clean Your Apples

You know how lovely and shiny apples look in the store? It’s usually because they’re covered in synthetic wax. Before taking a bite, try using a knife to scrape off the wax, put them in a bowl of water, and then use a nail brush to buff them.

Get the Best Crust on Your Mushrooms

Mushrooms make an excellent substitute for steak, so why not go all the way and recreate that enviable crust? The crust is created through a reaction between reducing sugars and amino acids. In order to achieve this with mushrooms, boil them before frying.

Removing corn from the cob is both time-consuming and messy. You are trying to get all of those stubborn kernels while watching them fly around your kitchen each time you make a sudden movement. It’s something that prompts most people to just leave it all and buy canned corn instead. But this might not be the best approach.

There is one simple hack that will help you remove corn from the cob in no time. There is some mess still included, but you’ll finish a batch in a matter of minutes.

Simple Hack for Removing Corn From the Cob

As with all good cooking hacks these days, the one for removing corn from the cob quickly comes from TikTok. It is showcased in a video posted by @denisemellott300, which received 14 million views and 1.1 million likes in a short period of time.

The clip shows the user’s son removing corn kernels at an amazing speed by using an angel food tube cake pan turned upside down. He is simply pushing the corn through the tube, with the pan collecting all the kernels and the cob just sliding straight into the sink.

Note that you’ll end up with a wet shirt if you don’t use an apron while doing this, but it is surely worth the time you will save. Check out the demonstration below.

Scrolling through TikTok and Instagram there are a plethora of cooking hacks and to be honest, most of them look too good to be true. We have to admit, we were skeptical about these hacks actually working, but we’re glad we gave them a try. Here are five internet hacks that will make cooking easier.

Roll Out Dough with a Vodka Bottle

Instead of using a rolling pin or wine bottle, use a frozen vodka bottle to roll out dough. The bottle will keep the dough cold, which makes it less sticky and easier to roll. Roll the dough between pieces of parchment paper so it doesn’t get condensation on the bottle.

Dice Through a Cooling Rack

Quickly dice hard-boiled eggs and avocados with a cooling rack. Just put the rack over a large bowl and push the food through with a metal spatula. You’ll get perfect pieces every time.

Slice with Dental Floss

Slice cheeses, divide doughs, slice cheesecake, and cut cinnamon rolls with unflavored dental floss, to cut clean slices.

Clean Up a Mess with Lint Rollers

The sticky side of lint rollers are ideal for picking up spilled spices, rice, or sprinkles.

Spray Spoons

Are you sick of your syrup or honey getting stuck on the measuring spoon? Before pouring them on, spray the spoon with non-stick spray. It will slide right off.

Microwaves don’t have to be all about ready meals and reheating leftovers. If you know how to work with your microwave, it can be one of the best kitchen assistants you could hope for. Here are four microwave hacks that will transform your cooking experience to the max.

Peeling Garlic

Do you ever have trouble getting off sticky garlic skin? Well, now you don’t have to. Simply pop your garlic cloves into the microwave on medium power for 30 seconds and the skin will peel right off in one go.

Baked Potatoes

Rather than cooking baked potatoes in the oven for hours, all you have to do is simply pierce them all over and cook them in the microwave on full power for around 15 minutes. You’ll know they’re ready to eat if they slide off of the fork when pierced.

Toasting Nuts

Nuts are actually best toasted in the microwave because they cook more evenly than they do in an oven or on the pan. Simply cook them at 1-minute intervals on full power until they are suited to your tastes.

No More Crying!

You can prevent tears when chopping onions by microwaving them before you start. Heat the onion on medium power for around 45 seconds before starting, and you’ll be good to go.

Well, it looks like you’ve been selected to host a large dinner for a group of your closest friends and family members! You happily accepted the offer, neglecting the future version of yourself that would eventually have to cook everything. But that’s all good! You just wanted to please everyone, even though you’re now cramming at the last minute trying to figure out how you’re actually going to get everything done. But have no fear: here are some quick tips that’ll help you prepare a meal for a large group.

Stock Up On Sides

What people really want to see when they sit down for a large meal is the table covered with platters. But those platters don’t have to all necessarily be entrees. Most of the dishes you make can be simple side dishes, and they’ll cover up the table just as effectively.

Ask For Help

This may seem obvious, but one of the best things you can do in this situation is to just ask for some help. Yeah, you might’ve agreed to do everything, but no one will think any less of you if you ask them to make a dish or two. If they’re going to be eating in the meal, then they should especially help out!
