Bananas are one of the most versatile and readily available foods that we see in every supermarket. They’re packed full of vital nutrients and taste great to boot, but do you ever find yourself at a loss to know exactly what to do with your bananas? Just peeling away the skin and eating them can get boring pretty quickly. Here are some simple ideas to help you start making the most out of the bananas in your kitchen closet.

Banana Chips

Believe it or not, bananas make really great chips. Simply cut them into thin slices, spread over a baking tray, squeeze some lemon juice over the top, and sprinkle with salt. Bake at 415 for around 45 minutes. Leave to rest for 10 minutes until crispy.

Banoffee Pie

The beauty of banoffee pie all lies in the combination of three different flavors: the cream, the biscuit, and the banana. As long as you have these three elements together, you can make banoffee pie. Drizzle on the chocolate sauce for best results.

Fresh Banana and Chocolate

A classic combination is chocolate and fresh banana, and you can find these two foods put together all over the place. Banana is especially good with dark chocolate, because the sweet fruit complements the bitter chocolate perfectly.

You often hear lots of pompous advice about which wines go with which cheeses. This is usually very specific advice and the wines are, let’s say, not on the cheap side. While this is often a marketing strategy cooked up by wine companies or experts eager to demonstrate their knowledge, it is usually good advice if you are truly passionate about wine.

But for the rest of us, the truth is most wines and cheeses are a great combination. The two flavors just work together. So you don’t have to be a wine expert or spend an arm and a leg to enjoy it.

As long as you follow some very broad guidelines, you don’t need the opinion of an expensive wine connoisseur to start enjoying your wine right now!

Sweet White Wines Do Not Work

As a rule, sweet white wines do not combine well with cheeses. The rare exception is if you are going for a sweet and sour combination, but this is not generally advised.

Red Wines Are Best

Generally, red wines go best with all kinds of cheeses. Although, if the cheese is very strong, then a lighter red might be preferable.

Dry Whites Are Also Good

Dry white wines also go very nicely with most cheeses. This can be especially refreshing if you are enjoying your cheese in the sunshine.

Cooking vegetables is usually seen as being rather straightforward. You just chop them up and cook them until they’re soft, right? While vegetables are simple if you know what you’re doing, there are also several ways that cooking with vegetables can go wrong. One of the main things that people stumble on is chopping vegetables to the right size for whichever dish they’re cooking. Different cooking styles require different-sized vegetables. Here are some of the essentials of veg prep.

Dice for Frying

Frying has a short cooking time. You can’t fry foods for long periods without them burning. For this reason, if you are frying your vegetables you want to cut them into small chunks that will cook easily.

Small Chunks for Stews

If you are preparing stews or casserole dishes that will be simmering for a while and have a long cook time, chop your vegetables into small chunks. This means about 1-inch in length. This allows them to soften to the right consistency.

Medium Sized Chunks for Roasting

If you are going to roast a medley of vegetables, chop them into medium/large chunks. For example, chop an onion or pepper into four pieces and bake them like that.

Hummus is a healthy and versatile dish that you can use with many different flavors and for many different meals. You can use a variety of foods to dip into the hummus, from bread to cheese sticks. One of the healthiest options though are fresh carrots. It is a great way to enhance the flavor of the hummus while leaving a fresh taste in your mouth. Here’s how to prepare your carrot dippers.

Skin

Carrot sticks are perfect for dipping into your hummus. First, skin the carrot with a peeler so that it is all smooth.

Cut the Carrot Into Sheets

Next, cut the carrot in half crossways so you have two long halves. Use the broad blade of a cheese grater to grate each half into large sheets of carrot.

Chop Into Sticks

When you are left with these, cut each one lengthways into four or five carrot sticks. These will then be the perfect length and width for dunking.

Enjoy

And there you have it! Perfect carrot for dipping into hummus. Each one has a satisfying crunch which complements the creamy texture of the hummus. For best results, eat with plain hummus or garlic and herb varieties.

If you love enjoying a coffee while you lounge in the garden or talk with friends, these foods will each take your afternoon coffee to the next level. Each one enhances the flavor of the coffee and pairs perfectly with the bitter notes. Here are four desserts that will complement your coffee.

Buttery Pastries

Pastries that are rich in butter such as croissants and pain au chocolates are a perfect accompaniment to coffee. Just serve them up on a plate and enjoy!

Cake

The sweetness of most cakes is enhanced by drinking coffee along with it. And it also makes it even easier to enjoy your coffee. But the best are richly flavored cakes like chocolate cake, coffee, and hazelnut, or salted caramel.

Oatmeal Cookies

Oatmeal cookies have just the right balance of sweetness and savory. The textures pair well with the richness of the coffee. For optimum taste try adding some honey or syrup to the cookies.

Dark Chocolate

Perhaps one of the most popular pairings is dark chocolate. It complements and echoes the notes of the coffee brilliantly. Eat it on its own or with a combination of the foods listed above.

Cooking is all about confidence. Once you know how to do the basic things well, you can keep growing and growing. But it’s not always clear exactly what those basics are. If you don’t have time to make silly mistakes, how are you ever going to learn them? Here are a few simple cooking hacks that will help you cut corners without losing quality.

Use a Sharp Knife

The worst cuts are not caused by sharp knives—they’re caused by blunt ones. Blunt knives don’t cut smoothly and they have a tendency to slip. Use a sharp knife and not only will your food be much better prepared, but you are far less likely to hurt yourself doing it.

Quick Custard

If you need to make quick custard for a dessert but you just don’t have time, never fear! Simply melt some vanilla ice cream and warm it up. And there you have it, tasty custard. The ingredients are just the same—eggs, sugar, cream, and vanilla.

Use the Right Oil

Ordinary olive oil is the best for cooking. Virgin olive oil or extra-virgin, is best used for dressing salads, making dressings, and dipping bread.

Look After Your Salad

If you’re dressing a salad, always make sure that you mix vinegar or lemon with oil before you apply it to the salad. Otherwise, the acid will spoil the leaves and the taste.

Octopus has become one of the most widely eaten and decadent foods on the planet. It is enjoyed across cultural boundaries and is a common fixture on fine dining menus. But octopus is usually considered food for the professional chef to prepare. Most home cooks wouldn’t know where to start with serving an octopus. To help you build up some confidence with this rewarding food, here are some tips on how to work with it.

How Do You Receive It?

Octopus can be bought whole, ready prepared, fresh, frozen, or in cans. If it is already prepared, then you might receive it smoked, dried, or already marinated. If you are just starting out, it might be best to buy a ready marinated octopus to find your feet.

How to Cook with Fresh Octopus

Fresh octopus needs to be tenderized before eating. If it hasn’t already been tenderized, beat it with a mallet before you start cooking. It is then best to braise or stew it.

What Flavors Should You Pair with Octopus?

You can fashion a brilliant accompaniment to your octopus out of a rich red wine and balsamic vinegar sauce. The best herbs to use are parsley, sage, rosemary, or paprika. If you’re going for a more Asian-style dish, it goes great with sesame oil, chili, and soy sauce.

As summer begins to draw to a close, fun family picnics are a great way to enjoy the last few weeks of warm weather. You need quick and easy foods that taste great without making a mess, and therefore here’s a delicious picnic spread that will keep your family happy this summer.

Baguette

First off, the base of your picnic will be a freshly baked loaf of French Stick. Preferably bought from a bakery rather than the supermarket, it should have a crunchy crust with a soft, silky inside.

Olives and Artichokes

Mixed olives, grilled artichokes in olive oil, and sun-dried tomatoes are great side dishes that you can also use to fill out your baguette.

Smoked Salmon and Garlic Cheese

Buy a few sheets of responsibly sourced smoke salmon and a French garlic soft cheese like Boursin. The smoky salmon complementing the garlic tang of the cheese is beautiful. You can use these as a filling for your baguette or eat them with the olives, artichokes, and sun-dried tomatoes.

Fresh Greens Salad

The finishing touch to the picnic is a fresh greens salad. Mix fresh lettuce, rocket, red onion, and sliced apple in a plastic box with olive oil.
