There are many reasons why our hair changes over time. It could be due to age, stress, hormones, and genetics, but diet also plays a large role. Protein and vegetables, especially leafy greens, are important for all our organs, and adding in lots of omega-3 and iron-rich foods will help your hair and nails stay strong. If you’re craving a bit of crunch, nuts are an excellent go-to. They can be added to salads, sprinkled on top of soups, or swirled through desserts, but truth be told, we prefer them roasted just like this.

Step #1

If you prefer your nuts to be flavored, you can mix up a seasoning. A sweet and spicy version involves combining sugar, salt, chili powder, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper, and tossing the nuts through. If you prefer something plainer, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle some sea salt.

Step #2

Coat a rimmed baking sheet with cooking spray. Lay out the nuts evenly. You want your oven to be below 300°F as roasting nuts at high temperatures can damage the natural nut oils.

Step #3

Roast the nuts for around 45 minutes. Stir them once during the process so that each side becomes golden and toasty. Once done, allow the nuts to cool on the baking tray, stirring occasionally.

If you’re preparing to go on a long and rigorous hike, you’ll probably need to bring some snacks. Oftentimes it’s hard to bring large meals on hikes such as this, so you need something that’s both small but also nutritious. Here are a few things you can take that offer the best of both worlds.

Nuts

You really can’t go wrong when it comes to nuts. They’re good for you, incredibly light, and easy to carry, and they also happen to be super delicious. When you like peanuts, cashews, almonds, chestnuts, or walnuts, you’ll surely be satisfied.

Trail Mix

The cool thing about trail mix is that you don’t have to choose what your favorite kind of nut is. You get an assortment of just about everything from nuts to crackers to pretzels. There’s a reason that trail mix is something of a fan favorite, and it’s because they were made specifically for hikes. Hey, it’s called “trail mix” for a reason.

Beef Jerky

Here’s a great hike snack that doesn’t get talked about often—beef jerky. If you’re someone who just needs some meat, this is by far the best option you could go for. You’ll get that saltiness, the roughness, the tastiness, and of course a great dose of protein—all in a clean, easy-to-carry package.

Desserts can be a killer when you’re trying to stay in shape. They can be incredibly addicting and hard to avoid, but thankfully there are desserts that are healthier than others. If you’re trying to maintain a healthy and well-balanced diet, here are three desserts ideas to hold you over when your meals are done.

Fresh Fruit

You can’t really go wrong with a large tray of fresh fruit. Whether you love oranges, mangos, peaches, nectarines, apples, pears, plums, or pineapples, they’ll always round out your dinner in the best way. These natural delights are healthy and sweet, making them an excellent healthy dessert choice.

Sorbet

Sorbet isn’t always the healthiest thing in the world, but it’s a heck of a lot more healthy than cakes, pies, ice cream, or cookies. If you simply need to have something cold and sweet, you could do a lot worse than sorbet.

Nuts

If you’re less about the sweets, a fun thing to nosh on during desserts are nuts. From roasted almonds to cashews, there are countless delicious varieties of nuts you can munch on with a steaming cup of tea. As long as you eat them in moderation, they can be super healthy for you.

Nuts are an incredible way to level-up many different baked goods. Many brownies, cookies, muffins, and so much more taste even better with nuts. Adding nuts to baked goods is a great idea because they add crunch and a nutty flavor. If you’re considering adding nuts to your baked goods, here are some of the best nuts to bake with.

Walnuts

Walnuts are one of the most popular nuts to bake with because they toast quickly and add a mild, buttery flavor. Walnuts can pretty much be used in any type of baked good including cakes, cookies, and breads. We recommend trying them in your banana bread! They add such a good flavor, plus it doesn’t hurt to add a little crunch to an otherwise soft bread.

Pecans

Surely you’ve heard of pecan pie, so it’s no surprise that pecans are also great for baking. They have a super rich flavor when you bake them, which makes them a great addition to many recipes. Pair pecans with anything pumpkin-flavored and it’s sure to be a crowd favorite.

Almonds

Almonds are amazing for baking. They have a slightly sweet flavor, making any baked good just a little sweeter! Adding slivered almonds for a crunch factor is super popular in baking as well!

Regularly eating nuts and seeds is super important for hormone regulation, plus it adds extra protein into your diet.

Trail mix is great for snacks on the go, or you can even put it in a dish and serve it to guests! It’s a great way to level up a plain bowl of nuts. It’s also a healthy replacement for eating a bag of chips while you watch TV.

The greatest part about trail mix, especially when you make it from home, is that the options are endless. You can totally customize it to your preferences. It’s good to have a balance between sweet and salty, but again, it’s totally up to you! With that being said, we think our trail mix recipe is pretty spectacular. So, if you don’t know where to start, try this recipe!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup honey roasted salted peanuts
  • 1 cup cashews
  • ½ cup shelled sunflower seeds
  • ½ cup raisins
  • ¼ cup dark chocolate chips

Instructions:

  1. Place all the ingredients in a large container.
  2. Mix together all ingredients. You have the option to keep it as a large batch, or you can separate into smaller serving sizes.

We’re convinced that trail mix is totally underrated. Even if you’re not a hiker, making a big batch of trail mix is a great healthy snack that tastes good and helps you eat more nuts and seeds!
