Between busier-than-ever schedules and the rising cost of food, we’re all looking for ways to save money and make things easier for ourselves in the kitchen. We just don’t have time to prepare a fancy meal every day, but the price of takeout and pre-packaged options tends to put a dent in our budget surprisingly quickly. Planning and meal-prep can help, but what about when the dishes we prepare go off before we have time to eat them, or ingredients expire too quickly? This is where the freezer comes in—read on to learn more about some lesser-known freezer-friendly foods.

Avocado Halves

Avocados aren’t cheap, and many of us are all too aware of how frustratingly short their shelf life can be. To make them last longer, allow your avocados to reach your preferred ripeness, slice them in half, and remove the pit and peel. Sprinkle with a little lemon juice to prevent browning, then wrap each half tightly in plastic before putting them in the freezer. When you’re ready for some guac or avocado toast, defrost by allowing them to sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes.

Eggs

Egg whites and yolks have different culinary properties, and as such, plenty of recipes call for one or the other with no instruction on what to do with the remains. Rather than put perfectly good food to waste, you can preserve egg whites by pouring them into an ice cube tray and freezing for later use. Yolks, on the other hand, become unusable if frozen whole, but can be made freezer-friendly by beating until smooth with a pinch of salt.

Cheese

Not all cheeses are freezer-safe, but if you’re looking to preserve hard varieties like cheddar, gouda, or parmesan, know that you can do so without compromising their flavor or texture. Just portion your cheese into single servings by slicing or grating, then wrap tightly in tin foil before placing in the freezer. To thaw, move the cheese to the refrigerator overnight.

Patience is not one of our strong suits, so you can imagine our frustration over having to wait for an avocado to ripen. The green fruit is at its best when it’s soft enough to smush on a piece of toast, but not too soft that it’s changing color. If you can’t wait for that rock-hard avo to reach the sweet spot, these tricks may help.

Sunbathe

You know that cozy feeling of laying out in the sunshine, warming up inside and out? That’s what your avocado needs. Wrap them up in newspaper and place them in a spot that receives a lot of sun. In a few days, you’ll be able to unwrap the newspaper and get a lovely, ripe avo as a gift.

Fruit Friends

Placing the guacamole machines in a paper bag is a well-known trick, but there is a way to improve upon it. Add an apple or banana along with the avocado. The fruit releases ethylene gas which speeds up the ripening process. Your babies should be ready in about a day and a half.

Into the Oven

If you really don’t have time to waste, the oven is your friend. Wrap the unripe avo in aluminum foil and pop it into a 200°F oven for about 10 minutes. The result is perfectly smushable.

If guacamole is your go-to, we have some excellent news! Somehow or other, avocados had a glow-up during the 2010s when the fruit became the number one topping for toast and even found itself in brownies. Unfortunately, avocados are also super expensive. Until now.

Although inflation has sent the price of almost everything soaring through the roof (RIP butter), avos are, surprisingly, one of the cheaper items at the grocery store these days. According to reports, the wholesale price for avocados is actually down 35% year on year. It makes a nice change to last June when avocados were 67% more expensive than now.

More than 90% of avocados in the United States actually come from Mexico, and so, import issues were the reason that the price increased earlier this year. Now that trade has normalized, avos are back on the market.

Ordinarily, bumper crops would be exported around the world. But, significant food inflation in Europe, the war between Russia and Ukraine, and COVID issues in China have meant that most of the oversupply has wound up in the United States. And that means avocados are currently much more affordable.

Avos for all!

If you’re a huge fan of experimenting with all sorts of different salad dressings, it’s time to give avocado dressing a shot. Avocado’s creamy texture can really take your salad dressing to the next level, and here are three things you should keep in mind before adding it to the mix.

Vegan Twist

The great thing about avocados is that they can serve as a plant-based alternative to other creamy dressing ingredients, such as eggs, mayo, and sour cream. If your dressing calls for these ingredients, try replacing them with avocado when possible and you’ll be impressed by the result.

Avocado Choice

It’s extremely important to use ripe avocados when making salad dressings because they won’t break down properly otherwise. It’s highly recommended to use a blender to make your dressing extra-smooth and add some lemon juice to the mix to balance out avocado’s creamy texture.

Different Uses

Avocado dressing can be paired with all sorts of different salads, but you shouldn’t stop there. Avocado-based dressings are worth making because they’re incredibly versatile, and you can use them to top your sandwiches and tacos or serve it as a dip with hot wings or tortilla chips.

You know that feeling when you buy a new avocado, hoping you can eat it right away, only to discover it’s not ripe enough? We’ve all been there because picking the perfect, ready-to-eat avocado can be a difficult task, but these three tiny details can help you make the right choice.

Color

The easiest way to determine the ripeness of avocado is to pay attention to its color. The skin of ripe avocados will be dark green or even nearly black. If you want to eat your avocados right away, they are your best bet, while green avocados are a better option if you can wait for them to ripen.

Texture

The texture of your avocados is also an important sign of their ripeness. Avocados with dark green skin and a bumpy texture are usually ready to eat right away, while the ones with smooth texture still aren’t ripe enough.

Firmness

The color of the avocado doesn’t always indicate ripeness, and that’s why you sometimes have to use other methods. You can always place the avocado in the palm of your hand and squeeze it gently to check its ripeness. The perfectly ripe avocado will feel lightly soft, but not too mushy to the touch.

Avocados come with a long list of health benefits, but eating an entire avocado at once usually isn’t the best idea due to their high-calorie content. Storing your cut avocados can be tricky since they tend to turn brown pretty quickly, but here’s how you can stop that from happening.

Plastic Wrap

If you want your avocado to stay fresh as long as possible, don’t just leave it lying there in your fridge. The least you can do is use some plastic wrap to delay the browning process.

Citrus Method

A tiny drop of lemon juice goes a long way when it comes to keeping your avocados fresh. Citrus fruits contain strong antioxidants, and that’s why you should brush your halved avocados with lemon or lime juice before storing them in an airtight container.

Olive Oil Method

If you don’t have any lemon at home, you can repeat the same method with olive oil that doesn’t have a strong taste. It will prevent air from touching the exposed part of the avocado, keeping it fresh for longer.

Onion Method

Believe it or not, avocados and onions are a match made in heaven. Place chopped red onions in an airtight container, put avocado flesh-side up on top, and you’ll have fresh avocados for longer than usual because the vapors from cut onions will stop them from browning.

Guacamole is usually the first dish that people think of when someone mentions avocados. Instead of just focusing on one, several delicious dishes contain this beloved fruit—such as desserts, salads, soups, smoothies, and more. These are some of the fit-for-king avocado dishes.

Avocado Cheesecake

Getting its candy-like texture is the most important for this dessert, and sweetened condensed milk is one of the most important ingredients. Its sweetness will highlight the taste of ripe avocados. All that remains is to add biscuits, crackers, cream cheese, lemons, and limes, chill it completely, and your cake is ready for the plate.

Sandwich Time!

A variety of vegetables—such as shredded carrots, sliced cucumbers, red onions, mild fresh chiles, and lettuce leaves—are just the starting point for this dish. Match them with avocados, toasted bread, greek yogurt, and cheese to make a perfect sandwich.

Team Green Salad

The shades of green in a bowl will open your appetite. Combine creamy avocados with cucumber, green salad, asparagus, tons of fresh basil, oil, honey, fresh orange juice, red wine vinegar, to get a healthy and delicious salad.

In the food world, it’s no secret that avocados are all the rage right now. These delicious and nutritious green vegetables have exploded in popularity in recent years due to their increased availability and their versatility as a healthy addition to diets.

While avocados are commonly eaten as part of a salad or sauce, mashed on top of toast, or even on a hamburger, it’s actually super easy and tasty to dress up an avocado and eat it on its own! Here are three ways to make an avocado taste delicious by itself.

Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar

A great way to give an avocado a special and attractive taste is by drizzling it with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Olive oil gives you a dose of healthy fats while the balsamic vinegar gives an acidic edge to the creamy and sweet avocado.

Sea Salt and Cracked Black Pepper

If you’re an avocado lover in its purest form, you’ll love just giving it a little flavor boost by sprinkling a tad of sea salt and a pinch of cracked black pepper on top. It still tastes like avocado, but even more savory and special.

Cayenne Pepper and Lemon Juice

Give your avocado a kick by adding a blend of cayenne pepper and lemon juice on top! The creaminess of avocado blends perfectly with the citrus spice of this mixture. You’ll love it, that’s a guarantee.

Patience is not one of our strong suits, so you can imagine our frustration over having to wait for an avocado to ripen.
