]]>Avocados aren’t cheap, and many of us are all too aware of how frustratingly short their shelf life can be. To make them last longer, allow your avocados to reach your preferred ripeness, slice them in half, and remove the pit and peel. Sprinkle with a little lemon juice to prevent browning, then wrap each half tightly in plastic before putting them in the freezer. When you’re ready for some guac or avocado toast, defrost by allowing them to sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes.
Egg whites and yolks have different culinary properties, and as such, plenty of recipes call for one or the other with no instruction on what to do with the remains. Rather than put perfectly good food to waste, you can preserve egg whites by pouring them into an ice cube tray and freezing for later use. Yolks, on the other hand, become unusable if frozen whole, but can be made freezer-friendly by beating until smooth with a pinch of salt.
Not all cheeses are freezer-safe, but if you’re looking to preserve hard varieties like cheddar, gouda, or parmesan, know that you can do so without compromising their flavor or texture. Just portion your cheese into single servings by slicing or grating, then wrap tightly in tin foil before placing in the freezer. To thaw, move the cheese to the refrigerator overnight.

]]>You know that cozy feeling of laying out in the sunshine, warming up inside and out? That’s what your avocado needs. Wrap them up in newspaper and place them in a spot that receives a lot of sun. In a few days, you’ll be able to unwrap the newspaper and get a lovely, ripe avo as a gift.
Placing the guacamole machines in a paper bag is a well-known trick, but there is a way to improve upon it. Add an apple or banana along with the avocado. The fruit releases ethylene gas which speeds up the ripening process. Your babies should be ready in about a day and a half.
If you really don’t have time to waste, the oven is your friend. Wrap the unripe avo in aluminum foil and pop it into a 200°F oven for about 10 minutes. The result is perfectly smushable.

]]>Although inflation has sent the price of almost everything soaring through the roof (RIP butter), avos are, surprisingly, one of the cheaper items at the grocery store these days. According to reports, the wholesale price for avocados is actually down 35% year on year. It makes a nice change to last June when avocados were 67% more expensive than now.
More than 90% of avocados in the United States actually come from Mexico, and so, import issues were the reason that the price increased earlier this year. Now that trade has normalized, avos are back on the market.
Ordinarily, bumper crops would be exported around the world. But, significant food inflation in Europe, the war between Russia and Ukraine, and COVID issues in China have meant that most of the oversupply has wound up in the United States. And that means avocados are currently much more affordable.
Avos for all!

]]>The great thing about avocados is that they can serve as a plant-based alternative to other creamy dressing ingredients, such as eggs, mayo, and sour cream. If your dressing calls for these ingredients, try replacing them with avocado when possible and you’ll be impressed by the result.
It’s extremely important to use ripe avocados when making salad dressings because they won’t break down properly otherwise. It’s highly recommended to use a blender to make your dressing extra-smooth and add some lemon juice to the mix to balance out avocado’s creamy texture.
Avocado dressing can be paired with all sorts of different salads, but you shouldn’t stop there. Avocado-based dressings are worth making because they’re incredibly versatile, and you can use them to top your sandwiches and tacos or serve it as a dip with hot wings or tortilla chips.

]]>The easiest way to determine the ripeness of avocado is to pay attention to its color. The skin of ripe avocados will be dark green or even nearly black. If you want to eat your avocados right away, they are your best bet, while green avocados are a better option if you can wait for them to ripen.
The texture of your avocados is also an important sign of their ripeness. Avocados with dark green skin and a bumpy texture are usually ready to eat right away, while the ones with smooth texture still aren’t ripe enough.
The color of the avocado doesn’t always indicate ripeness, and that’s why you sometimes have to use other methods. You can always place the avocado in the palm of your hand and squeeze it gently to check its ripeness. The perfectly ripe avocado will feel lightly soft, but not too mushy to the touch.

A tiny drop of lemon juice goes a long way when it comes to keeping your avocados fresh. Citrus fruits contain strong antioxidants, and that’s why you should brush your halved avocados with lemon or lime juice before storing them in an airtight container.
If you don’t have any lemon at home, you can repeat the same method with olive oil that doesn’t have a strong taste. It will prevent air from touching the exposed part of the avocado, keeping it fresh for longer.
Believe it or not, avocados and onions are a match made in heaven. Place chopped red onions in an airtight container, put avocado flesh-side up on top, and you’ll have fresh avocados for longer than usual because the vapors from cut onions will stop them from browning.

]]>While avocados are commonly eaten as part of a salad or sauce, mashed on top of toast, or even on a hamburger, it’s actually super easy and tasty to dress up an avocado and eat it on its own! Here are three ways to make an avocado taste delicious by itself.
A great way to give an avocado a special and attractive taste is by drizzling it with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Olive oil gives you a dose of healthy fats while the balsamic vinegar gives an acidic edge to the creamy and sweet avocado.
If you’re an avocado lover in its purest form, you’ll love just giving it a little flavor boost by sprinkling a tad of sea salt and a pinch of cracked black pepper on top. It still tastes like avocado, but even more savory and special.
Give your avocado a kick by adding a blend of cayenne pepper and lemon juice on top! The creaminess of avocado blends perfectly with the citrus spice of this mixture. You’ll love it, that’s a guarantee.
