You know that feeling when you buy a new avocado, hoping you can eat it right away, only to discover it’s not ripe enough? We’ve all been there because picking the perfect, ready-to-eat avocado can be a difficult task, but these three tiny details can help you make the right choice.

Color

The easiest way to determine the ripeness of avocado is to pay attention to its color. The skin of ripe avocados will be dark green or even nearly black. If you want to eat your avocados right away, they are your best bet, while green avocados are a better option if you can wait for them to ripen.

Texture

The texture of your avocados is also an important sign of their ripeness. Avocados with dark green skin and a bumpy texture are usually ready to eat right away, while the ones with smooth texture still aren’t ripe enough.

Firmness

The color of the avocado doesn’t always indicate ripeness, and that’s why you sometimes have to use other methods. You can always place the avocado in the palm of your hand and squeeze it gently to check its ripeness. The perfectly ripe avocado will feel lightly soft, but not too mushy to the touch.
