Patience is not one of our strong suits, so you can imagine our frustration over having to wait for an avocado to ripen. The green fruit is at its best when it’s soft enough to smush on a piece of toast, but not too soft that it’s changing color. If you can’t wait for that rock-hard avo to reach the sweet spot, these tricks may help.

Sunbathe

You know that cozy feeling of laying out in the sunshine, warming up inside and out? That’s what your avocado needs. Wrap them up in newspaper and place them in a spot that receives a lot of sun. In a few days, you’ll be able to unwrap the newspaper and get a lovely, ripe avo as a gift.

Fruit Friends

Placing the guacamole machines in a paper bag is a well-known trick, but there is a way to improve upon it. Add an apple or banana along with the avocado. The fruit releases ethylene gas which speeds up the ripening process. Your babies should be ready in about a day and a half.

Into the Oven

If you really don’t have time to waste, the oven is your friend. Wrap the unripe avo in aluminum foil and pop it into a 200°F oven for about 10 minutes. The result is perfectly smushable.
