How to Tell Whether Your Eggs Have Gone Bad

You can keep eggs in the fridge for a pretty long time, but they do have an expiration date and it may be closer than you think. If you have reason to believe your eggs have gone bad, here are some ways to check that.

Check the Box

Every carton of eggs comes with an expiration date imprinted and checking it can be your first clue. If there’s a production date on the carton, the general rule is that eggs are good for three to five weeks from then.

Float Test

Test the suspicious egg by putting it in a bowl of water. If it sinks, it’s still good. If it floats, it’s best to toss it. This happens because small air pockets form inside the eggshell within a few weeks, so this is a good test for determining if the eggs are fresh or old.

Crack It

You can see exactly what you’re dealing with if you just crack the egg, just make sure to crack it into a separate bowl instead of adding it to some other food directly in case it got bad.
