How to Amp Up Your Plating Skills

Everyone says you eat with your eyes first, and it’s completely true. No matter how good your food is, it will always taste better if you plate it perfectly.

Colors

Color is a huge factor in a beautiful plate. Unless you want to go for a modernist dish that only has one color, it’s important to try to eat the rainbow. If the dish you’ve cooked doesn’t have a lot of color, add in more with garnishes like herbs.

Textures

Not only are different textures important to have for the overall taste, but they also affect the way your plate looks. If you have a lot of smooth things in your dish, like purees or mashes, make sure you use something crunchy to go on top, like something fried or even some breadcrumbs or nuts.

When it comes to plating, space is always something fun to play with. You can decide whether you want your food and garnishes to be all over the plate, or whether you want it to just be in one part, leaving some negative space.
