Waffles are misunderstood. Growing up as children, we adore them. We douse them with syrup and dream about them the following night, only to repeat the process when we wake up again. When we get older, we learn that waffles are actually unhealthy, and that they’re not part of a “nutritious and balanced diet”. But is this really true? We’re here to tell you that waffles don’t have to be unhealthy, and here’s how.

You Can Make Them At Home

If you make your own waffles, you can make them to your liking, and that means adding in whichever organic compound or nature kick the world is obsessed with today. If it makes you feel better, you can make your own healthy waffle recipe, and there are countless food influencers on social media who will be happy to teach you how to do it for free.

Switch Syrup With Something Else

Another way to make your waffles healthier is to simply lay off all that syrup. In reality, maple syrup is one of the main reasons waffles can be so unhealthy, so if you merely substitute it with something healthier such as a fruit, it’ll be a lot better for your morning.

Going vegan doesn’t necessarily mean you have to turn your back on all the foods you once used to love – especially if the food in question happens to be waffles. Carine Claudepierre is doing a great job putting a plant-based twist on this beloved dessert, and here are some of the best recipes from her blog The Conscious Plant Kitchen.

Vegan Protein Waffles

If you’re still new to making waffles and want to kick things off with a basic recipe, this is a good place to start. Made with entirely plant-based ingredients, these waffles also happen to be high in protein because vegan vanilla protein powder is one of their main ingredients.

Oat Flour Waffles

Switching up flour is one of the easiest ways to put a healthier twist on a wide range of different baked treats – including waffles. Claudepierre opted for oat flour this time around and made waffles that taste delicious, while also being free from refined sugar, and gluten-free.

Buckwheat Waffles

Speaking of switching up flour to make your waffles truly pop, buckwheat will also get you there. This type of flour is a true nutritional powerhouse and it offers a great natural source of protein.

Waffles are one of the timeless brunch staples, and their only downside is that they’re not as healthy as they are delicious. Luckily, there are many different ways to put a healthy twist on them, and these simple tips will help you do it with ease.

Make Your Own

Most people buy their waffles at a local grocery store, but the tricky thing about them is that they’re usually packed with sugar and made from refined flour. You can try to avoid this issue by carefully checking the label and looking for whole wheat waffles, but making your own is also an option because it leaves you in total control of the ingredients you’re using.

Cut on Syrups

Another tricky thing about waffles is that most people can’t imagine eating them without butter and maple syrup. These ingredients contain high amounts of saturated fat and sugar, so you should try to cut down on them, skip them altogether, or look for healthier alternatives.

Healthy Toppings

Even if you make your own waffles and ditch maple syrup, you can still ruin them with chocolate spreads and other unhealthy toppings. Instead of using them, try topping your waffles with fresh fruits to make them healthier and more fiber-rich.

Popping frozen waffles in the toaster is the easiest way to cook them. But the fact that this is the most common way to make this breakfast staple doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best. Here are three alternative ways to make frozen waffles.

On the Stove Top

Recommended by no other than Tyler the Creator, this method of cooking frozen waffles is quite simple. Start by slathering both sides of the waffle with butter, then heat a pan on medium-high heat and toast one side until it’s golden (about two minutes). Before flipping the waffle, sprinkle some cinnamon on it.

In an Air Fryer

Using the air fryer to make waffles is very simple, but it’s important that you get the timing right so you don’t end up with a waffle that’s too crunchy. Preheat to 350°F (180°C) and put the buttered waffle in the air fryer basket for 3 minutes. Flip it over and cook for 2-3 minutes more. For thicker waffles, you may need that extra minute of cooking time.

The Oven

Preheat your oven to 375° F (190°C) then bake your waffle for about 8 minutes until it becomes golden. According to chef Gianna Stanely, drizzle a couple of drops of water on the waffle before popping it in the oven, to prevent it from drying out.

The recipe for this dish is painfully simple but it will result in some of the tastiest waffles you have ever tried.

Ingredients:

  • 6 eggs
  • 3 large bananas

  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • Maple syrup
  • Crushed pecans

Instructions:

  1. Peel two bananas and mash them in a large bowl.
