There are many foods that share strong similarities with other foods, and one great example of this is the pairing of yams and sweet potatoes. These two starchy root veggies often spark bundles of confusion regarding which is which—but no longer! Here’s a quick guide regarding the main differences between yams and sweet potatoes.

Settling the Score

First things first, let’s clear up the misconception: what you typically find in your local grocery store labeled as “yams” are actually sweet potatoes. In fact, true yams are not commonly found in most Western markets. When you think of yams, picture a tropical tuber with rough skin and a starchy interior, quite distinct from the sweet potato’s orange flesh.

Sweet Potatoes Are More Diverse Than You Think

Sweet potatoes come in various colors ranging from orange and yellow to white and even purple. Each variety boasts its unique flavor profile, sweetness, and texture. So, whether you prefer a sweeter and moister sweet potato or a drier and starchier one, there’s a sweet potato out there to suit your taste buds.

Different Origin Stories

Another key difference lies in the geographical origins. Yams are primarily found in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, whereas sweet potatoes have their roots in Central and South America. However, due to historical reasons, the term “yam” is often used interchangeably with sweet potatoes in certain regions, leading to confusion.

Sweet potato fries have slowly but surely emerged as one of the greatest finger foods of our modern generation. You can find them at sports bars, family get-togethers, and even in your college dorm room. They’re incredibly easy to make and super tasty—but we can assure you that this sweet potato fry recipe is the best of all. Let’s get into it!

Ingredients:

  • 4 large sweet potatoes, peeled with ends trimmed
  • 1 egg white
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt

Instructions:

Step One:

Before you begin the process, preheat your oven to 450 F, and cover a large pan with parchment paper.

Once your sweet potatoes have been rinsed, peeled, and trimmed, chop them up into french fry-style shapes. This part of the process is really up to you, since you can make them as big or small as you want.

Step Two:

Next, place the egg white into a separate bowl and whisk it until it’s foamy. In a completely different large bowl, mix the olive oil, water, garlic powder, cumin, sugar, paprika, and pepper.

Take the chopped sweet potatoes and dress them in the foamy egg white liquid, before dressing them up in the spice mixture as well. Once each sweet potato fry is dressed, lay them out on the pan and sprinkle them with salt.

Step Three:

Roast the sweet potato fries uncovered in the oven for a total of 20 minutes. Transfer them to a serving plate and enjoy!

Many of us often use the words “yam” and “sweet potato” interchangeably, but the truth is, sweet potatoes and yams are not one and the same! They’re two different plants. With fall coming up, it’s the perfect time to settle this issue once and for all and explain the main differences between the two.

Botanical Family

Even though yams and sweet potatoes look a bit similar, they don’t belong in the same botanical family. While sweet potatoes belong in the bindweed or morning glory family, yams belong in a different family called Dioscoreaceae.

Looks

Yams and sweet potatoes differentiate in their skin color, too. Yams have a rather rough, brown skin, and sweet potatoes have a thinner, commonly-orange skin. Other than the orange sweet potatoes we all know and love, there are also white and purple sweet potatoes.

Texture

Well, the two plants are not too different in texture, actually. However, yams tend to be a bit starchier than sweet potatoes.

Taste

This one probably won’t be a big surprise, since one of them actually has the word sweet in its name: while sweet potatoes have that signature sweet taste that we all know and love, yams aren’t particularly sweet and have a taste similar to the one of a regular potato.

Sweet potatoes are one of the “it” foods everyone seems to be raving about right now, and if you want to get the best out of them, make sure to avoid these five mistakes.

Fridge Storage

Like regular potatoes, this veggie shouldn’t be stored inside your refrigerator. It’s quite durable, as long as you keep it in a cool, dark environment.

Ditching the Skin

As long as you wash your sweet potatoes properly, there’s no need to ditch the skin, because it’s actually one of its most nutritious parts.

Sticking to Savory Meals

Sweet potatoes are a pretty versatile veggie, and they shouldn’t be reserved for savory meals alone. There are many pretty popular sweet potato-based desserts that you can experiment with.

Careful with Boiling

Boiling sweet potatoes may be the most effortless way to prepare them, but it won’t positively impact their nutritional content. Water will strip them of their healthy nutrients, so try to get a little bit more creative when picking a dish you’re going to use them in.

Bruised Potatoes

Be extremely careful when buying sweet potatoes and avoid the ones with blemishes and bruises because their flash has been exposed and they’ve already started going bad.

Sweet potatoes probably aren’t an ingredient you thought of adding to your milkshake, but they’re actually a match made in heaven. Their creamy and sweet flavor perfectly complements chocolate, leading to a surprisingly delicious milkshake you can’t get any other way.

This unusual, yet amazing recipe was shared by Nisha Vora of Rainbow Plant Life. In addition to sweet potatoes, you’ll also need frozen bananas, and cocoa powder to get it done—and you can make it 100% vegan by using the right ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium-sized sweet potatoes
  • 3 cups creamy plant-based milk
  • 3 large, ripe frozen bananas
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

Instructions

  1. After preheating the oven to 400ºF, bake your sweet potatoes on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet for approximately 40-60 minutes, until tender. After letting the potatoes cool down, slide the skins off before adding them to the blender.
  2. Add plant-based milk, frozen bananas, cacao powder, maple syrup, cinnamon, and ginger to the blender with the sweet potato flesh.
  3. Blend the ingredients until bananas and sweet potatoes turn into puree. The mixture should be thick, smooth, and creamy, and you can make it sweeter if needed by adding maple syrup.
  4. Pour the milkshake into glasses, and top with melted dark chocolate, vegan chocolate chips, coconut whipped cream, or non-dairy whipped topping if desired.
  5. Store leftover for up to two days in the fridge.

It’s a cozy fall-appropriate flavor packed into a moist, cakey bread to which you can add nuts or even chocolate chips if you like. This is a great baked good to bring to seasonal gatherings or to make for yourself to eat for snacks and breakfast. It also happens to be naturally dairy-free and can be made extra healthy with whole wheat flour depending on your needs.

Ingredients:

  • 1 large sweet potato, cooked and mashed, or about 1 cup of puree
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup oil
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/4 cup hot water
  • 1 3/4 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice, or a large pinch each of cloves, nutmeg, allspice, ginger, and cardamom
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup hot water
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts and/or chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Cream oil and honey in a large bowl, then beat in the eggs one at a time.
  2. Next, stir in the sweet potato until well combined.
  3. Finally, sift together dry ingredients and add and combine them little by little, alternating with hot water.
  4. Pour into a loaf tin and bake at 325 F for 40-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
