Sweet potatoes probably aren’t an ingredient you thought of adding to your milkshake, but they’re actually a match made in heaven. Their creamy and sweet flavor perfectly complements chocolate, leading to a surprisingly delicious milkshake you can’t get any other way.

This unusual, yet amazing recipe was shared by Nisha Vora of Rainbow Plant Life. In addition to sweet potatoes, you’ll also need frozen bananas, and cocoa powder to get it done—and you can make it 100% vegan by using the right ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium-sized sweet potatoes
  • 3 cups creamy plant-based milk
  • 3 large, ripe frozen bananas
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

Instructions

  1. After preheating the oven to 400ºF, bake your sweet potatoes on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet for approximately 40-60 minutes, until tender. After letting the potatoes cool down, slide the skins off before adding them to the blender.
  2. Add plant-based milk, frozen bananas, cacao powder, maple syrup, cinnamon, and ginger to the blender with the sweet potato flesh.
  3. Blend the ingredients until bananas and sweet potatoes turn into puree. The mixture should be thick, smooth, and creamy, and you can make it sweeter if needed by adding maple syrup.
  4. Pour the milkshake into glasses, and top with melted dark chocolate, vegan chocolate chips, coconut whipped cream, or non-dairy whipped topping if desired.
  5. Store leftover for up to two days in the fridge.
