Ever since COVID hit, food delivery became an even bigger hit than it already was. This inspired some restaurants and aspiring restaurant owners to open so-called Ghost Kitchens, a new concept of kitchens that only do delivery work without actual restaurant-type seating places. Why is this so revolutionary?

First of all, running a ghost kitchen is a much smaller initial investment than opening a restaurant. It requires smaller staff, not as much space, and can be launched quicker. All that aside, one of the main advantages of a ghost kitchen is that it can actually be two or three “virtual restaurants” at once. This means using the same equipment and people to create a few different menus that are presented as a different restaurant on third-party delivery services in order to maximize the number of orders.

With so much flexibility and a lower cost of doing business than traditional restaurants, ghost kitchens are able to offer competitive prices and attract more customers than ever before. They are so popular, you may have already used ghost kitchen services without even realizing it!

Searching for somewhere to have dinner tonight? The world’s 50 best restaurants have been announced!

Since 2002, a panel of 1,080 culinary experts have compiled this prestigious list which covers eateries across the globe. The list has not been without controversy, however, as European restaurants have dominated the rankings and most establishments are headed by male chefs.

Although this year’s index features restaurants from Europe, North America, South America, Asia, and Africa, there are none from Australia or the Middle East, and Africa—a continent with 1.3 billion people—is only represented by one restaurant in South Africa.

So who made it to the top in 2022?

A ruling implemented by the 50 Best group in 2019 declared that former winners cannot occupy the No. 1 spot a second time. This meant that the last restaurant to receive the crown, Noma in Copenhagen, was out of the race.

The distinguished list was announced by actor Stanley Tucci, who won a Primetime Emmy Award for his culinary travel series, Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy, during a ceremony in London. The top spot was given to Geranium which is also located in the Danish capital and was last year’s runner-up. The restaurant features a 16-course tasting menu and can be found on the 8th floor of the national soccer stadium.

Located in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square, Bar Bombon is a plant-based paradise sure to satisfy any lover of Latin American food. The owner, Nicole Marquis owns multiple vegan eateries around the city, including the fast-food chain HipCityVeg. She decided to open Bar Bombon in honor of her Puerto Rican heritage, putting meat-free, dairy-free spins on all of the classic recipes her Abuela used to make. It’s also a mezcal bar with cocktails, including margaritas, made with some top-shelf brands. If you’re ever in the area, be sure to check it out, and definitely don’t skip on these signature dishes:

Buffalo Cauliflower Tacos

Run, don’t walk to try these tacos. Crispy fried cauliflower sits on a bed of black beans and veggies all wrapped up in a soft and warm tortilla. They’re the perfect amount of spicy, perfectly balanced by some rich and creamy avocado.

Spanish Meatballs

Plant-based meatballs swim in a pool of romesco sauce served in a cute little cast iron skillet. They’re dusted with fresh herbs and served with a side of grilled bread to soak up all the sauce—and believe us, you’ll want to.

Latin Chop

A classic chopped salad with a Latin twist from grilled corn, tortilla strips, and cilantro dressing. Take it to the next level and add chorizo-spiced “meat.”

Upon traveling to Europe for the first time, eating out can be a surprise when it comes time to order water. Americans especially have an interesting experience ordering this drink you’ll find at almost any lunch table thanks to quirks that European restaurants feature when it comes to H2O. Here are some surprising things about the culture of water drinking in Europe!

It’s Never Free!

While in many places in the world, going to a restaurant and ordering a “water” results in a glass of free tap water being brought to you, this is not the case in Europe! No matter what restaurant or bar you’re dining at, you will have to pay for water.

Still or Sparkling?

Sparkling water isn’t a common drink to enjoy in many parts of the world, but in Europe it is. This leads to waiters and waitresses often surprising people with the “still or sparkling?” question that some people don’t even understand!

Bottled, Never Tap

It is rare to find a restaurant in Europe which will serve you tap water. Despite it being sanitary and fine to drink, restaurants almost always opt to serve bottled water to their patrons, considering it to be better-tasting and a superior accompaniment to a meal.

As a home cook, it sometimes feels like no matter how much you practice or how good you get, you just can’t manage to make meals as good as the ones in your favorite restaurant. Why is that? Are they doing some kind of special secret thing that the rest of us don’t know about? Well, not exactly.

Seasoning

First, restaurants pack on the flavor like you wouldn’t imagine. They would never create a meal with just a sprinkle of salt and pepper and leave it at that. Those chefs are using much more salt than you might expect, and plenty of other seasonings, aromatics, and flavor bombs to boot. So get friendly with your spice rack if you want to turn up the flavor.

Fat

Restaurants also don’t shy away from using fat. At home, you might be a bit more health-conscious, but restaurants’ number one priority is flavor, and if they have to use a whole stick of butter in their pasta sauce to make it as delicious as possible, they’ll do it. A lot of the time, if you’re wondering what makes a dish taste so good, it’s because it’s got a lot of butter (or cream or full-fat milk).
