There are many reasons why our hair changes over time. It could be due to age, stress, hormones, and genetics, but diet also plays a large role. Eating particular foods can have an impact on your hair growth and keeping it healthy. Protein and vegetables, especially leafy greens, are important for all our organs, and adding in lots of omega-3 and iron-rich foods will help your hair and nails stay strong. Here are five foods to include in your diet to keep your hair healthy.

Nuts

Healthy fats are so important in your diet and help your hair, skin, and nails, so make sure to include almonds, cashews, and any other nuts of your choice in your daily diet. They contain tons of vitamins and are rich in antioxidants to protect your hair from stress and damage.

Leafy Greens

All leafy greens are great for your hair. They are filled with Vitamin A, which is necessary for hair growth and a great source of iron. You can add them to an omelet or include them in a salad to get your daily intake.

Yogurt

Yogurt is filled with protein and probiotics and is used in many at-home hair masks. It also contains Vitamin B5 which promotes hair growth. Eat a yogurt with some nuts and seeds for breakfast to maintain your healthy locks.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes contain beta-carotene which the body converts to vitamin A, which is needed for strong healthy hair. It is important to note that too much vitamin A can be harmful to your hair, so make sure you are getting it mostly from your food instead of supplements.

Collagen

Adding collagen to your coffee in the morning or a smoothie can keep your hair strong and encourage hair growth. Collagen contains amino acids, to build keratin, which is the protein found in hair.

Food culture involves so much more than just what makes it to our plates. A quick scroll through Instagram will reveal countless pages dedicated to restaurants, recipes, and traditions, and this phenomenon is not limited to social media. Humans have been telling stories about food for thousands of years, and one of the most effective ways we do this is through movies. There’s something about seeing a character’s love for an ingredient or efforts toward perfecting a treasured recipe that can enhance a narrative in ways almost no other subject can. Here are some of our favorite foodie films.

Julie & Julia

New York City food blogger Julie Powell attempts to cook her way through chef Julia Child’s cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking in 365 days in this 2009 comedy drama. The film is filled with mouthwatering shots of the dishes Julie cooks while also providing some historical background about how Julia Child got started.

Ratatouille

What we love most about Ratatouille is the film’s message that you don’t have to come from a specific background or have a formal education to succeed at something you love. It also does a great job of showing how sometimes the simplest dishes are the ones that mean the most.

Chocolat

Chocolat is a charming story about a mother-daughter pair who open a chocolate shop in a conservative French village. The film uses chocolate to explore complicated themes like following societal expectations vs establishing independence.

If you consider yourself a foodie, you’re likely always on the lookout for new and exciting flavor combinations. While there’s certainly nothing wrong with enjoying tried-and-true favorites like chocolate and peanut butter, sometimes it’s the unexpected pairings that yield the most delicious results. From chocolate and vegetables to oil and ice cream, read on to learn more about some unusual food combos that will take your taste buds on an adventure.

Apples & Cheese

The crisp sweetness of apples provides a perfect complement to the rich, creamy flavor of cheese. Together, they make a mouthwatering combo that works well in appetizers like charcuterie boards, as well as desserts. Add a few apple slices to a cheeseboard, or even incorporate cheddar into an apple pie by mixing some into the crust or filling.

Chocolate & Veggies

We know what you’re thinking – could there be two foods more opposite than chocolate and vegetables? It definitely sounds weird, but hear us out – beets have actually been used alongside cocoa powder in certain red velvet cake recipes for decades. Avocado adds a rich and creamy texture to puddings and custards, while chocolate does a fantastic job of masking any unpalatable flavors. We love this Chocolate Avocado Mousse recipe by Chocolate Covered Katie.

Olive Oil & Ice Cream

Is adding olive oil to a dessert already high in fat unnecessary? Yes. Should you do it anyway? Also yes. We’re joking, of course – do whatever you want, but we do seriously recommend giving it a try at least once. A drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil over some high-quality vanilla ice cream adds a touch of fresh fruitiness that somehow makes the ice cream taste more delicious and indulgent than it would if enjoyed alone.

It seems as if every country has their own version of noodles, and somehow each one is super unique in shape, flavor, and texture—and German spaetzle is no different! This delicious dish is essentially just German egg noodles, but with a fun shape and slightly chewy texture! It’s super versatile and once you try it, you won’t believe you lived your whole life up until this point without it!

How is it Prepared?

Spaetzle is made with just a few simple ingredients, which means you could totally make this at home if you wanted to! All you need to do is combine flour, salt, eggs, and milk to create a batter. The batter should resemble a pancake consistency, rather than a typical dense pasta dough.

What Do You Eat it With?

Wow, the possibilities are endless with spaetzle. You can eat this as a side dish, or mix it with a large list of sauces and meats to create a delicious meal. Some of the best dishes to eat with spaetzle include Swedish meatballs, various soups, or roasted vegetables!

Sandwiches are classic for a reason. There is so much you can do with a sandwich, hot or cold. They’re great for on the go, or sometimes they’re piled so high you have to sit down with a fork and knife to eat it. Either way, the bread you choose can make or break your sandwich. You want something that can hold the weight of the contents of your sandwich and most people prefer a bit of a crunch from the crust with a soft, doughy inside. Here are some of the best breads for sandwiches.

Focaccia Bread

Focaccia bread is an incredibly delicious Italian flatbread that is super soft on the inside.  The best part of the focaccia bread, however, is the crust. The crust is super crispy and sometimes is flavored with olive oil, salt, and/or rosemary. Focaccia is great for toasted sandwiches because it can hold gooey cheese without getting soggy due the crispy crust.

Sourdough Bread

Sourdough bread has been rising in popularity lately—and for good reason. Sourdough is a great option for people who have gluten sensitivities because it’s easier to digest than other types of breads. Sourdough also has a unique flavor that becomes a great addition to any sandwich.

French Baguette

The French Baguette is another classic sandwich staple. It’s great for those cold sandwiches because it still brings that fresh flavor and texture, even if it’s been sitting in your lunch bag for a few hours. It’s also a longer bread, so you can make a much larger sandwich with it.

Who doesn’t love a hack that reduces food waste AND gets you a free house plant? That’s right, you can use the pit of your avocado and grow a beautiful house plant! If you want to do this, follow the steps below.

Rinse and Soak

First, you’re going to rinse off the pit to remove any leftover avocado. Then, place it in a bowl of water and soak it for one hour.

Peel the Pit

Next you’re going to take the pit out of the water. You’ll be able to easily peel the outer layer off. Once the outer layer is peeled, it’s ready for the next step.

Wrap and Hide

Next, you’re going to wrap the pit in a damp paper towel. Roll it up into a ball and place it into a ziplock bag. Place the bag in a warm and dark place. Leave it there for a few weeks until the roots begin to grow.

Place in Water

For this next step, you’re going to place a few toothpicks in the top half of the pit at a downward-sloping angle. Place the pit into a cup of water so the roots are submerged and the top is not in the water.

Transfer to Soil

After a few weeks the roots will really start to grow. That means it’s time to place the roots into soil.

Enjoy Your Plant!

With time, the plant will grow taller and get big leaves. Enjoy your new beautiful house plant!

Yes, corn ribsyou read that right. So, what are they and are they actually good? We’ve been seeing corn ribs all over the vegan foodie world lately, and it got us wondering…do they actually live up to the hype? Let’s break it down.

What are Corn Ribs?

Corn ribs are an alternative to plain-old corn on the cob that tastes a bit more like Mexican street corn with a fun twist. The cobs are cut down the middle into quarters, so that it looks like the shape of a rib, with the cob acting as the bone. If you follow a vegan or vegetarian diet, you may be looking for a delicious alternative to ribs at your next barbecue. Corn ribs are a great option because you still get the fun of eating something off of a bone-like stick (in this case, it’s the cob), plus you can flavor them however you like.

Different Flavor, but Delicious!

The votes are in and they indicate that there is validity to the hype! We fully support the corn rib trend because they are fun and delicious. Although if you’re really looking for that true “BBQ rib” flavor, you might want to look elsewhere. As fun and tasty as these are, they don’t taste like meat at all because it’s, well, corn. So if you like corn, definitely try these out, but if you’re looking for something a bit meatier, you might want to give something else a try.
