Fast food has unfortunately seeped its way into the cornerstones of our diet as a society. Regardless of how much fast food you eat (if you eat it at all), it’s hard to deny that many people in the world today are somewhat addicted to it. We all talk about how unhealthy fast food is, but why should we be sure only to eat it in moderation?

High-Calorie Content

First off, fast food is high in calories, and it often exceeds the recommended amount that people are supposed to eat on a daily basis. When you eat too many calories each day consistently, you may gain weight.

High-Fat Content

Most fast food is also very rich in unhealthy fats, such as trans fats and saturated fats. When you eat many of these unhealthy fats daily, your cholesterol levels get higher. This can put you at risk for health problems, such as getting a stroke or heart disease.

High in Sugar and Salt

Most fast food items contain high levels of sugar and salt. Overconsumption of these can lead to kidney disease, high blood pressure, and even diabetes.

Kids are often keen to go to fast food restaurants. The meals are tasty and simple and there is often a kids’ menu to appeal to young palates. Of course, it’s fine to allow your kids to enjoy fast food every now and again, and there are even some ways to make it a more nutritious experience. Here are our top tips.

Explore the Menu

If your kids have already chosen a fast-food restaurant that they want to visit by your side, consider reviewing their menu online. By doing so, you’ll discover if they have any healthier options in store, ranging from salads to grilled chicken sandwiches.

Portion Control

One of the best ways to keep your food consumption on a healthier side, no matter how old you are, is to keep portions on a smaller side – especially at fast food restaurants.

Customization Allowed

Customization is allowed at most fast-food establishments, and you can take advantage of this perk to reduce the amount of unhealthy ingredients in your kids’ orders.

Veggie Boost

Even when eating at fast food restaurants, it’s possible to up the fiber and vitamin content of your order by eating a salad or using veggies as toppings or sides in other meals.

Beverage Choices

A drink will most likely be a part of your kids’ orders at fast food restaurants, so try to encourage them to ditch sugary sodas and milkshakes for healthier alternatives, such as water or unsweetened juice.

A healthy diet and fast-food restaurants usually don’t go hand in hand, but it’s possible to have the best of both worlds. Our brief guide will help you make healthier choices at fast food restaurants and opt for a balanced meal that aligns with your diet.

Smaller Portions

Portion control is everything when you’re trying to embrace healthy eating habits. The best way to avoid overeating is to forget all about super-sized meals and go for smaller portions.

Read the Descriptions

Pay closer attention when reading item descriptions whenever they’re provided. Deep-fried, pan-fried, batter-dipped, breaded, crispy, and scalloped dishes are usually best avoided due to their high fat and sodium content.

Grilled Over Fried

If you notice any grilled items on the menu, consider ordering them instead of fried options because they’re lower in saturated fats, sodium, and calories.

Drink Choice

Avoid sugary, super-sized beverages when eating at fast-food restaurants, and consider going for water or unsweetened tea and coffee.

Veggie Bonanza

Even the unhealthiest fast food restaurants usually have some salads and veggies on the menu. They’re the best possible choice at these establishments, but it’s a good idea to hold the sauce or dressing or serve it on the side to keep your salad on the healthy side.

From Burger King to McDonald’s, all major fast food chains have some plant-based options in store, but should vegans be flocking to their restaurants? Vegan fast food has its ups and downs, and here are five things worth keeping in mind before buying it.

Animal Cruelty

If you went vegan due to animal cruelty associated with other types of diets, keep in mind that fast food chains participate in all sorts of animal exploitation, even if they offer some vegan options.

Cross-Contamination

Cross-contamination is also a pretty common problem that might occur when you’re eating vegan fast food since these types of restaurants usually handle both vegan and non-vegan ingredients in the same kitchen.

Not That Healthy

If you want your plant-based food to be healthy, fast food chains are best avoided since. Most foods sold here are typically high in calories, unhealthy fats, and sodium – even vegan ones.

Taste & Freshness

Vegan fast food usually won’t be as tasty and fresh as the food at authentic vegan places since all the ingredients are usually prepped beforehand.

Good Message

Despite all the problems concerning vegan fast food, you’re still sending a good message to big chains by buying them. The bigger demand it is, the more likely it is they’ll embrace better practices in the future.

Sir Elton John is in the midst of his final tour, Farewell Yellow Brick Road, and when one Los Angeles vegan burger joint heard that he’d be giving his final North American performance in the City of Angels, they knew they wanted to do something to honor the musician and his contributions to the industry. Monty’s Good Burger worked with John’s team to create a limited-edition, plant-based meal with some colorful and sparkly upgrades that pay tribute to Elton John and his legendary style. This collaboration will only be available for a limited time, so be sure to check it out before it’s gone!

Monty’s Loves Elton Meal

Whether you’re a die-hard Elton fan or just in the mood to indulge, you’re sure to love this fun upgrade on a classic burger and fries. The meal includes a single vegan cheeseburger and a 50/50 mix of fries and tater tots served with a “Baby Blue Ranch” dipping sauce. Wash it down with some “Tiny Dancer” pink lemonade before enjoying the “Rainbow Rock” sugar cookie for dessert.

Glitter Glasses Shake

For an extra-sweet treat, the Elton-inspired Glitter Glasses Shake pairs perfectly with a meal but is also worth ordering by itself. Oatly vanilla soft-serve ice cream is blended with English toffee-flavored syrup and topped with whipped cream and a dusting of edible glitter.

Taco Bell’s menu is about to get a little more vegan-friendly. With the increase in plant-based alternatives, millions of restaurants have ditched the meat in favor of more sustainable and healthier options that vegetarian and vegan customers can also enjoy. Although Taco Bell is not completely forgoing its steak and ground beef, it is finally adding a long-awaited alternative.

Back in April 2021, the Mexican fast-food chain announced that it would be collaborating with Beyond Meat to introduce “a new innovative plant-based protein to appeal to an even broader audience”. Almost a year and a half later, the new product has been revealed!

“We know that consumers are looking for diverse protein options that are better for the planet without compromising on taste, so we’re incredibly excited to launch our brand-new, innovative Beyond Carne Asada Steak,” said Beyond Meat’s chief innovation officer, Dariush Ajami. “Designed to specifically complement the bold, savory flavors that Taco Bell is known for, Beyond Carne Asada Steak delivers the flavorful, delicious taste and texture of marinated, grilled steak with the added benefits of plant-based meat.“

Made from vital wheat gluten and faba bean protein, the Beyond Carne Asada Steak can be swapped for any regular steak item on the menu. It will be available in select Dayton, Ohio branches from October 13.

Fast food items like hamburgers, wraps, and fries all look amazingly attractive when you see them on TV, billboard, or other forms of advertisement. But more often than not, they are rather disappointing when you meet them in person. From the patty being paper thin and sauce being nonexistent to bad assembly, the point is that you are not getting the product that you have been promised.

The previous example is usually seen at big fast-food chains. These establishments have to churn out a significant number of items quickly, which leads to various missteps and sometimes below satisfactory eating experiences. Singapore-based foodie Ben Chia found himself in such situations too many times to count, but that didn’t discourage him from visiting fast foods. Instead, it inspired him to create an insanely popular Instagram account McSegent on which he started documenting the mishaps of the fast-food industry.

The account started gaining followers quickly, with people worldwide contributing their own examples of funny food items that the fast-food chains actually served to their customers. This included hits like American cheese on pancakes instead of breakfast sandwiches, upside-down Big Macs, and sandwiches missing one of the buns.

“That is something we are quite proud of,” said Chia. “I’m glad that this is something that people appreciate. And, you know, sometimes it helps us relax a little bit to not take things too seriously.”

Check out more examples of what happens when making fast food goes funny below.

One of Montreal’s claims to fame is that it’s the poutine center of the world. That being said, not everyone knows about where the best places to eat in the city are, and believe us when we say that there are better places than others. Here are some of the best poutineries for you to try if you want to get to know the true taste of this iconic dish.

La Banquise

This is perhaps Montreal’s best-known poutinerie. While it is often considered quite mainstream and expensive, it still remains a great place to become acquainted with the Quebecois dish. It has extensive options for creating your own poutine: if you can imagine it, they will make it. Oh, and there’s often a long queue to get in.

Chez Claudette

Whereas La Banquise is often busy with tourists, a popular establishment among the locals in Chez Claudette. After a night out in the town, it’s often less crowded, cheaper, and stays open just as late as La Banquise.

Lola Rosa

This is a vegetarian poutinerie that people can’t get enough of. The gravy is plant-based and if you want to make it vegan, just ask for no cheese.

Gibeau Orange Julep

This is perhaps the most iconic place to eat poutine in Montreal, and one of the biggest fan favorite places. The food is served to you in a large orange ball, which is always a fun experience.

Smoke Meat Pete

Here you can enjoy many different kinds of poutine dishes. Ranging from Italian, classic, or smoked meat, you’ll always find something to tickle your taste buds.

The United States is arguably the worldwide capital of french fries, and its never-ending array of fast-food restaurants are some of the best places to sample this tasty treat. If you’re going to be heading to the US and want to know which spots you must stop at to try french fries, make a list and keep these in mind as they represent the most iconic that the country has to offer.

McDonald’s

The most famous french fries in the country, and possibly in the world, belong to McDonald’s. Fried in vegetable oil and laced with “natural beef flavoring”, you’ll notice a slightly meaty touch with these salty beauties.

Arby’s

Arby’s is famous for its curly fries, which are cut in a unique, spiral curl manner. Also seasoned with a unique blend of spices including garlic powder and onion powder, they are especially delicious when dipped in the chain’s namesake sauce.

Chick-Fil-A

The king of Southern fast food is Chick-Fil-A and their french fries are a big reason why. Fried in a “waffle” shape in peanut oil, they are especially good for dipping since they’re able to hold onto such a big amount of sauce at once.

Dennis Prescott discovered a love for food and cooking over a long period of time. A once-struggling musician, he first took to the kitchen as a hobby, learning his way by studying Jamie Oliver books. But what began as a hobby would slowly take over his life—and Instagram account.

“I fell in love with food and cooking for people,” recalled Prescott in an interview with [EDIT] Magazine. “It was that idea of ‘the collision of food and community at the table.’ A friend said, ‘Have you heard of this new social media app called Instagram? You should try it!’ I think my first post was a selfie, but on my phone I started documenting the process of cooking and taking photographs of the dishes, because I genuinely wanted to remember what I had cooked the day before. There was no decision on my part to say, ‘Hey, I am going to be a food guy.’ It just worked out that the content I posted was what I was passionate about.”

Now, a viral-phenomenon-turned-celebrity-chef, Prescott is one of the stars of the Netflix series Restaurants On The Edge, and is known for his down-to-earth approach to cooking. He’s also a successful cookbook author, and his most recent book Eat Delicious is in stores now.

“I have always been one hundred percent,” says Prescott. “It goes even beyond passionate. It’s whatever the positive word is for being obsessive. If you are not going to shoot for the best and fully immerse yourself in what you are doing and strive to be your best version of your creative self, you will never be fully satisfied. Even if you are able to make a living, you won’t be creatively satisfied. It is because you are not embracing your desire to strive for excellence and get better at something every day.”

His Instagram page will have you craving a good ol’ burger.
