From cupcakes and muffins to pies and cakes, blueberries can be added to more desserts than we can count. They’ll instantly make them extra sweet, refreshing, and tasty, and here are some of the best ways you can use them to boost the flavor of your favorite desserts.

Fresh Blueberries

Unless the recipe specifically calls for a different type of blueberries, fresh ones are always the best possible option. Their flavor is unmatched and they can take all sorts of baked goods and desserts to the next level.

Frozen Blueberries

Frozen blueberries can replace fresh ones when they’re not in season. Just don’t forget to thaw them first so they wouldn’t release excess water into your batter or cookie dough because additional moisture could ruin their texture.

Dried Blueberries

Dried blueberries don’t serve the same purpose and have a different taste when compared to fresh and frozen ones, but they can do a great job making your desserts and baked treats chewier.

Blueberry Jam

Blueberry jam can be used in several different ways. In addition to adding sweetness to your desserts, it can do a great job altering their color. You can also use it as a topping or a glaze with some types of desserts and baked goods.

If you love blueberry muffins but are looking for breakfast ideas that help keep you full and energized, read on to discover some blueberry muffin-inspired recipes made with nutritious and filling ingredients.

Blueberry Muffin Breakfast Cookies

These cookies by Minimalist Baker have all of the fun fruity flavors of traditional blueberry muffins but are packed with protein and fiber to keep you full and focused all morning long. The recipe is vegan, but can also be made with eggs if you prefer to up the protein content.

Blueberries are one of the most delicious types of barriers on the market and adding them to your desserts is always a good idea. Tessa Arias knows this better than anyone and here are some of the best blueberry recipes from her food blog Handle the Heat.

Blueberry Scones

Scones are one of the most underrated desserts on the market, but their incredible simplicity makes them the best beginner-friendly recipe on the list.

Blueberry Muffins

There’s something truly irresistible about blubbery muffins. It’s not a surprise they’re a timeless classic, and if you still haven’t tried making them – now’s the time! In addition to being refreshing, these muffins are extra-nutty thanks to the addition of brown butter.

Blueberries make everything better and your loaf cake will be next-level if you use them as one of the main ingredients. If you’re new to baking blueberry cakes, don’t despair because they’re incredibly easy to make, especially if you take these three useful tips into consideration.

Blueberry Choice

Like most blueberry desserts, this one is best made with fresh blueberries because they won’t release as much liquid while baking. If you can’t find them and have to use frozen blueberries instead, give them some time to thaw and cover them with a thin coat of flour before tossing them into the batter so they stay afloat.

Flavor Combos

Blueberries will do a great job enhancing the flavor of your loaf cake, but they’re not the only extra ingredient that you should use. You can also experiment with different types of flour and add ground spices and floral herbs to the mix.

Frosting Dilemma

You might be tempted to frost your blueberry cake right after taking it out of the oven so you could finish the job, but be patient with this step. No matter what type of frosting or glazing you’re using, it will melt away if the cake is still warm, so give it some time to cool down.

Blueberries are a great addition to many baked goods. Whether it’s a cobbler or muffin, they will certainly upgrade any dessert. The reason for this is that blueberries release more flavor and become sweeter when baked.

But making baked desserts with blueberries can sometimes be challenging. For example, they tend to sink and concentrate at the bottom of the batter, making them unevenly spread in the dessert. If you want to avoid this and improve your baking with blueberries, check out these three super simple and efficient tricks.

Cover Blueberries with Flour

If you want your blueberries to be evenly spread in pancakes, cobblers, and muffins, then you should cover them with flour before mixing them with batter. The flour will help them stick to the batter and prevent them from sinking.

Leave them Last

Another way to make sure you get blueberries in each bite is to leave them last and add them by hand. If you’re making muffins, then add few berries to the muffin tins and then cover them with batter. Add more on top and pop in the oven. Some berries on top will sink to the middle of the muffin, while some will remain on top, spreading them equally.

The same goes for pancakes. After you pour the batter on a skillet or in a pan, take a handful of blueberries and just toss them on top to create the perfect ratio.

Don’t Defrost Frozen Blueberries

When you are using frozen blueberries, don’t defrost them. Instead, add them to the batter straight out of the freezer. The frozen blueberries will stick better to the batter while also becoming extra juicy in your baked goods.

Summer is finally here and that means that blueberry season has officially started! Blueberries are delicious and perfect for making many treats like pie, jam, or ice-cream, but did you know they’re also great for your health? Here’s how your health improves when you eat blueberries.

Better Memory

Blueberries contain anthocyanin, a type of antioxidant that gives them blue color. Studies like this one have shown that anthocyanin in blueberries improves brain functions—the elderly subjects performed better in memory tests after drinking blueberry juice for 12 weeks.

Brighter Mood

Although the act of eating blueberries can make you happier, that’s not what we’re talking about. A 2017 study showed that those who consumed blueberries have experienced mood improvement two hours later, so it’s definitely a good idea to add some of them into your morning oatmeal!

Healthier Heart

This study showed a link between eating foods that contain anthocyanin—like blueberries—and a lower risk of a heart attack. Isn’t that a perfect reason to always keep some blueberries in the fridge?

Lemon Blueberry Cupcakes

Once you master the art of making blubbery muffins, cupcakes shouldn’t give you any trouble. Lemon and blueberry are a timeless combo, and these cupcakes owe their taste to this delicious mix.

No Bake Frozen Blueberry Pie

Arias is a huge fan of blueberry pies and she shared several variations of this dessert on her blog. If we had to pick the most beginner-friendly option, this no-bake frozen blueberry pie, made in a similar way as no-bake cheesecakes, would make the cut.
