While sheet cakes are great for birthday and parties, they’re just as good for baking just because. They’re pretty simple—one layer of cake topped with frosting and some garnishes. There are tons of possibilities with chocolate, lemon, vanilla, raspberry, red velvet, and so many other options. And to make the perfect sheet cake, follow these tips.

Let Your Cold Ingredients Reach Room Temperature

Take your refrigerated items like eggs, butter, milk, or yogurt out of the fridge and let them reach room temperature. This will make it easier to mix the batter, resulting in a lighter, fluffier cake.

Set Things Up

Before you start the batter, preheat the oven and measure out all of your ingredients. Line or butter your bake pans. When your oven is preheated and the ingredients and pan are ready, start mixing the batter.

Be Careful Not to Under or Over Bake the Cake

Sure, there’s a time written on the recipe for how long the cake should be in the oven, but every oven is different, so keep an eye on your cake. Check the cake a few minutes before the recipe suggest to see if it’s done. To be sure the cake is done, poke it with a toothpick and if it comes out clean, it’s ready. You may have to leave the cake in the oven a bit longer than the recipe says.

Let the Cake Cool Before Frosting

We can’t stress this point enough. The cake needs to be completely cool before you frost it to avoid melting the frosting. Plan for at least 30-minutes for cooling time.

If you’re on a diet, the best thing you can eat is salad—right? Well, not actually. Salads can be really healthy, but if you’re loading them with tons of things, chances are they’re not as healthy as you may think. Fresh veggies, fruits, nuts, and lean protein are great to put in salads, but these five things are making your salad less healthy. Sure, they taste great, but if you’re trying to be healthy, avoid adding these toppings.

Cheese

Cheese is a great source of calcium, but it also has lots of sodium and fat. It’s fine to add cheese to salads, but don’t go overboard with it.

Croutons

Croutons have very little nutritional value and are loaded with empty calories. If you’re looking for a crunch, add nuts or seeds, which are more nutritious and will help your feel full.

Pasta

Pasta such as croutons is loaded with empty calories. When adding it to salads, don’t trick yourself into thinking you’re being healthy. Pasta is pasta. If you want pasta, just eat it.

Salad Dressing

No salad is complete without salad dressing, but many of them are full of fats and added sugar. You’re probably also adding way more dressing than you need. Instead, use olive oil and fresh lemon juice or olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Fried Meats

We suggest adding lean meats like turkey or chicken breast to your salads to make them more filling. Avoid fried or processed meats because they’re full of fat.

Gin and tonics are perfect for summer. They’re light, refreshing, easy to make, and most of all, they’re absolutely delicious. And if you love tonic, you have to try it in other cocktails. It’s a delicious addition to cocktails. Here are three cocktails with tonic that you have to try this season.

Paloma and Tonic

A Paloma typically has grapefruit soda, tequila, and fresh juice, but this version replaces the juice with tonic. To make this cocktail, combine two ounces of grapefruit, two ounces of tonic, and an ounce and a half of blanco tequila in a tall glass with ice. Stir everything together and garnish it with a rosemary sprig and a slice of grapefruit.

Sherry and Tonic

This drink is ideal for day drinking and it’s super refreshing. All you need is to fill a small wine glass with ice and add 2.5 ounces fino sherry and 2.5 ounces tonic. Give the drink a stir and garnish it with lime wedges and a mint sprig.

Spanish-Style Gin & Tonic

This Spanish take on the classic gin and tonic starts with placing two 2-inch lime peels in a balloon glass skin-side up and pressing them with a muddler to release the oils. Then add thin slices of cucumber to the glass and muddle them. Add 1.5 ounces of gin and stir. Fill with three ounces of tonic and stir. Complete the drink by garnishing it with cucumber slices and a lime wedge.

Scrolling through TikTok and Instagram there are a plethora of cooking hacks and to be honest, most of them look too good to be true. We have to admit, we were skeptical about these hacks actually working, but we’re glad we gave them a try. Here are five internet hacks that will make cooking easier.

Roll Out Dough with a Vodka Bottle

Instead of using a rolling pin or wine bottle, use a frozen vodka bottle to roll out dough. The bottle will keep the dough cold, which makes it less sticky and easier to roll. Roll the dough between pieces of parchment paper so it doesn’t get condensation on the bottle.

Dice Through a Cooling Rack

Quickly dice hard-boiled eggs and avocados with a cooling rack. Just put the rack over a large bowl and push the food through with a metal spatula. You’ll get perfect pieces every time.

Slice with Dental Floss

Slice cheeses, divide doughs, slice cheesecake, and cut cinnamon rolls with unflavored dental floss, to cut clean slices.

Clean Up a Mess with Lint Rollers

The sticky side of lint rollers are ideal for picking up spilled spices, rice, or sprinkles.

Spray Spoons

Are you sick of your syrup or honey getting stuck on the measuring spoon? Before pouring them on, spray the spoon with non-stick spray. It will slide right off.

What’s your favorite flavor of Jolly Rancher? Ours is blue raspberry. But have you ever thought to think about what blue raspberries are? Have you ever seen blue raspberries? We haven’t. They’re not a real thing. Blue raspberry flavor is found in everything from candy to popsicles, so what is it?

Blue raspberry started off red, but due to the food color dye, specifically Red No. 2 being deemed unsafe by the Food Additives Amendment of 1958 and the Color Additive Amendment of 1960. That’s when they decided to use Blue No. 1 in the ’70s, which resulted in blue raspberry. It started with a frozen treat company called ICEE because the blue color resembled the blue the brand was using in its marketing.

One of the reasons blue raspberry became so popular is because it stands out from other fruit-flavored treats. It’s easier to tell it apart from cherry, watermelon, and strawberry. Pretty cool—right?

In regards to if there’s a blue raspberry out there, well, the color most resembles the whitebark raspberry that’s grown in western parts of North America, which is blue-black when it’s ripe. But it’s not nearly as vibrant as the blue raspberry shade. Whitebark raspberries aren’t sweet like the blue raspberry flavor you’re familiar with.

Bridgerton has captivated our hearts and taken over our TV screens and we have found ourselves wanting to emulate the world of Regency-era London into our daily lives. One such tradition that is seen throughout the series is afternoon tea and if you want to live your best Bridgerton life, here’s how to have your very own worthy of Lady Whistledown’s approval.

Tea

Traditionally, the teas used for high tea are caffeinated ones like Early Grey or herbal ones like chamomile. Make sure you pick a high-quality tea.

Menu

Serve some sweet and savory bites like tea sandwiches, cookies, and scones.

Tea Set

High tea isn’t complete without a pretty vintage-style tea set with a pot, cups, saucers, and sugar and milk containers.

3-Tiered Serving Stand

You’ll need a 3-tiered sandwich and cookie tray to hold all of your snacks. To stick to tradition, put your scones and breads on the top tier, sandwiches on the second tier, and sweets on the bottom.

Lace Tablecloth & Napkins

A lace tablecloth or runner sets an elegant tone and it protects your table from spills and crumbs. You’ll also need lace napkins to make the setting more regal.
