We don’t know about you, but two of our favorite things to eat are sandwiches and cake. Well, did you know that you can actually make something that’s a combination of those two things? Yep, we’re talking about sandwich cake, also called Smörgåstårta in Swedish. It’s basically a giant sandwich built like a cake and it’s commonly made for gatherings like birthdays and funerals.
Want to try out this weird-looking, yummy-sounding dish for yourself? Here’s how to make a simple version.
Ingredients:
- 1 loaf of bread
- 1 container of cream cheese
- 1 package of smoked salmon
- Lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 3 eggs
- Salt
- Pepper
- 2-3 radishes
- 1 carrot
- Chopped chives
Instructions:
- Boil your eggs.
- Cut the crusts off your white bread.
- Combine smoked salmon, 1/4 cup of cream cheese, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, and salt and pepper to taste. Refrigerate the mixture.
- Once the eggs are boiled, make an egg salad using 3 chopped boiled eggs, 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise, a squeeze of lemon juice, and salt and pepper to taste. Refrigerate.
- Now it’s time to assemble the cake! On a large dish, lay out four slices of bread. On top of it, spread a layer of cream cheese and sprinkle on chopped chives.
- Spread on a layer of salmon mixture. Top with four more slices of bread. Add another cream cheese and chive layer.
- Spread on a layer of egg salad. Add four more slices of bread, and top with cream cheese and chive.
- Now you can decorate the top layer with chopped chives, sliced radishes, finely slices carrots, and salmon rosettes.
- Slice like a cake and serve!
