Listen up, because this is not a drill—September 18 marks National Cheeseburger Day! Considering what a staple the classic dish is on many a menu, it makes sense that there is a total day dedicated to the delicious burger.

Cheeseburgers were not always as common as they are now. Legend has it that they were invented in 1924 by Lionel Sternberger. The Pasadena native was 16 at the time and working at his father’s sandwich shop where he decided to experiment by placing a slice of American cheese on a sizzling hamburger. It paid off.

Almost a century later, several fast-food chains are gearing up to celebrate cheeseburgers in all their glory!

On September 18, McDonald’s, Dairy Queen, Smashburger, Jack in the Box, and Wayback Burger will all be offering specials on their menu. Here’s what to get, and where.

Jack in the Box

Even though they are California-based, Jack in the Box is getting in on the national spirit. Customers who order through their app can get a Jumbo Jack Cheeseburger for $2 with any in-app purchase.

Smashburger

Buy one, get one free? Yes, please! Customers can take advantage of this deal by using the promo code BOGO22 both in-store and online.

McDonald’s

You can definitely count on McD’s to celebrate Cheeseburger Day! The chain will be giving away a free cheeseburger through the McDonald’s app with just a $1 minimum purchase.
