In an informal survey by The Globe and Mail via Facebook, these were the food items considered to be the “Canadian national dish.” Of course, maple syrup was not considered, but we all know it would have come out on top if it were included.

Poutine

A winning combination of fries, gravy, cheese and meat, poutine is the comforting dish which makes winters in Canada little bit snugger. 51% of participants consider it to be the national dish and it is certainly a big hit among Americans traveling up for a visit.

Montreal-Style Bagels

The wood-fired baked is thinner, sweeter and denser than a New York-style bagel. It also contains no egg so it is vegan-friendly too.

Salmon Jerky

Salmon jerky is particularly popular in Alaska, where it is a snack to grab and eat on the go.

Pierogi

Pierogi is in fact an Eastern European dumpling, which typically contains potato, cheese, meat or fruits. Although the dish was brought over by immigrants, it has become a central part of Canadian cuisine.

Ketchup Chips

While us boring lot enjoy a classic salt & vinegar flavor, 7% of participants consider “ketchup crisps” to be the Canadian national dish. We’re intrigued to try it.
