The Defined Dish Offers Simple and Healthy Recipes

Alex Snodgrass is one of those natural-born foodies. “Since I can remember, food and cooking have always been a passion of mine,” she writes on her successful food blog, The Defined Dish. “Growing up I was always the kid helping my mom in the kitchen, and then in college became the girl cooking and testing recipes for my roommates and friends.” Nowadays, she very much enjoys spending time in the kitchen, tasting and refining her recipes, and making delicious and nutritious meals for her family.

Luckily for us, Snodgrass’s passion for food outgrew her kitchen. Her blog and accompanying Instagram page offer simple healthy recipes that are relatively easy to follow along. And while most of her recipes are Whole30/Paleo compliant, there’s the occasional super indulgent dish. “I am from Texas and us Texans like big bold flavors,” she writes. “So I never skimp on flavors with my healthy dishes. They’re hearty, healthy, and freaking delicious! However, it’s also all about balance for me.”

One basic, go-to, cooking tip of hers is not to skimp on salt and pepper. “You’ve got to use the salt and pepper,” she shared in an interview with USA Today. “Like, when cooking a soup, it’s not just adding it at the end. It’s adding those layers, like when you’re sautéing your vegetables in the beginning, just to make sure that you add a little bit of salt there so that it’s layered in there and it’s not just on the top, just sitting there and it doesn’t really flavor the dish. Salt brings out a lot of flavor,” she stresses.

According to Snodgrass, she’s always up to cook new, unique recipes and adapt them in her kitchen. A driving force behind her passion is the experience of cooking itself and the ways in which it brings out joy in other people. The recipes themselves are a product of her loved experience with a specific food, modified to her unique taste, family palette, and dietary needs.

Another perk of being a food blogger is the community she cultivates around her. “I’ve always loved to share food with people, and I think it’s one of those things that brings people together: your family, your friends, and so many different cultures together,” says Snodgrass. “It’s really nice to be able to share on a wide scale and put healthy and delicious dinners on other family’s tables so they can enjoy each other with my food.”
