There are thousands of chefs on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube to watch. Each one has their own style and can teach you something different, but one of the most unique is George Lee. A young Taiwanese chef, he is bringing Taiwanese food culture to an American audience. The twist? Most of his recipes are vegan. Here are some of his best summer treats.

Chocolate Tofu Donuts

Donuts are delicious, but they’re also usually made with butter, milk, and eggs. And they aren’t a very substantial snack. Not only are these donuts vegan, they’ve also got a serving of protein in them from the tofu. Here, the tofu is used as a binder to create a moist cake-like quality.

Sweet Red Bean Soup

If you’re someone who likes to drink warm drinks in hot weather to cool you down, then this is a great dish to try. It’s an East Asian dessert soup made of cooked red beans with sugar and mochi on top. If you’ve ever tried red bean paste, then you’ll know what to expect from the taste.

Frozen Sweet Potato

George Lee has recounted how in Taiwan, they sell frozen sweet potatoes in convenience store freezers. He says they are custardy and refreshing, the perfect summer snack. Luckily you can make them right at home. He recommends using Japanese yellow sweet potatoes if you can get your hands on them, as these are closer than regular American yams to the kind used in Taiwan.
