Pomegranates are one of the most delicious fruits, with a wide variety of health benefits. If you pick a good pomegranate, the seeds are so red, juicy, and delicious. Pick a bad one, though, and you’ll be disappointed—the seeds will lack that sweetness and juiciness you were craving. Obviously, picking the perfect pomegranate is super important, and yet sometimes it’s hard to know if the one you see at the shop is a good one. Luckily, there are a few ways to figure out if the pomegranate you picked up is the perfect one to buy.

It’s Heavy

When a pomegranate is really good, it has super juicy seeds. The extra juice makes the pomegranate really heavy, especially for its small size. So, if you pick up a pomegranate and it seems pretty heavy, it’s likely a good one!

It’s Not Perfectly Round

Similar to watermelons, the perfect-looking ones aren’t usually the best-tasting. Look for pomegranates that aren’t perfectly round. If they have flatter sides, you’re looking at a good one.

It Has Shiny Skin

If the pomegranate you picked up has bruised or rough skin, put it back. This is not the perfect pomegranate you’re looking for. Instead, look for a pomegranate with super smooth and shiny skin.

Pomegranate kernels, or arils, are delicious, beautiful in color, and packed with antioxidants. The only problem? They are protected by a thick, inedible reddish peel. And if you don’t have much experience doing it, cutting and peeling a pomegranate to get to the crunchy seeds inside can be tricky. Don’t worry, we have some tips to make the task much less intimidating.

First, Cut out the Crown

Pomegranates have a small pointy protrusion on one end that resembles a crown. Using a sharp knife, simply slice the crown off along with a little bit of the white pith underneath.

Slice the Pomegranate into Sections

After losing the crown, run the knife from the crown end all the way around the fruit, devising it into quarters. If you notice little ridges running down your pomegranate, cut along those ridges. Next, grab each side with your hand and gently but firmly break the pomegranate into halves along the scored lines, and then break each half into quarters.

Remove the Arils

Place the section in a bowl of water and use your fingers to roll out the arils, separating them from the pith. You can also hold a section over a bowl and whack the peel with a wooden fruit to dislodge the arils into the bowl. Finally, discard the peel and white pith, as they are inedible.

Winter might seem like a difficult time to find fresh produce. The decreased levels of productivity on farms and the colder weather in these months make it a little more challenging to find fruits that are in-season and tasty during this time of the year.

However, there are some fruits that are actually especially fresh and good during the winter.

Grapefruit

Grapefruits are in season during the winter and they are a great option to add to your kitchen during this time of the year. This tart citrus fruit is delicious when topped with just a little bit of sugar, and it’s high in antioxidants, Vitamins C and A, and it even contains some fiber!

Kiwi

Kiwi comes into its own in the winter in the Northern Hemisphere, becoming widely and abundantly available during this time of the year. This delicious little green beauty is simultaneously sweet and tart, and it’s a great option as a fruit side dish or even as a healthy dessert!

Pomegranate

One of the most exotic fruits widely available on the market are pomegranates and it’s in season during the winter. We love pomegranate as a yogurt topping and its juice is also absolutely fantastic. The cost of this fruit goes down in the winter too, making it an even more attractive buy.
