People who love drinking wine probably have a large collection of wine corks at home, or they’re throwing them in the trash on a regular basis. But next time you open a bottle of wine you can save these little bottle stoppers and put them to good use by making one of these useful items for your home.

Coasters

These are the only coasters you’ll want to use for your wine glasses in the future because they look so decadent and rustic. The best thing is that you won’t need too many wine corks to make them and it’s a simple DIY project that’s perfect for beginners.

Plant Labels

Every gardener needs plenty of plant labels, especially in the spring, so start collecting wine corks and try making these cute and useful plant holders.

Bathmat

Another super stylish and rustic thing you can make using wine corks is this cute bathmat. It’s very soft and unique and making it at home shouldn’t take more than a few hours.

Frames

Instead of buying an expensive mirror, you can always recycle old wine corks and make one of these unique mirrors that will add a vintage vibe to your home.

One of the most trendy approaches to buying vegetables in recent years is ordering “farm boxes” of vegetables full of leaves, stems, and stalks. For those of us with smaller kitchens, this can make a big mess of mud and leftovers just to fit all these veggies into the fridge. But even worse, it feels like discarding all these extra parts of the plant is very wasteful, so here are a couple of ideas on how to do better for your budget and waste management:

Unexpected Delights

Great examples for delicious uses of the entire plant are cauliflower leaves, Brussels sprouts stems, and beet stems. All are actually great when roasted in the oven with some olive oil and salt, and the beet stems are a fantastic addition to any salad.

Stalk Up

This can take a while to get right and requires a little extra space in the freezer. As you use your vegetables for your everyday cooking, try to collect the stems, peels, and other leftovers in a freezer bag, and when you have enough to almost fill a small saucepan, make your own vegetable stalk from them. Things that would be nice in a stalk are onion peels, kale and tomato stems, celery leaves, and other similar parts that we usually discard. Add water and seasoning, boil and simmer down to get the flavor!

If this pandemic thought us anything, it’s that we need to be more careful with the way we treat our planet and ourselves. The sudden mindset change got us thinkןמע of ways to be more eco-friendly, even if we didn’t pay much attention to it before. Here are three things you can do to reduce waste when grocery shopping.

Reusable Bags

The first thing you need to do is to stop getting single-use plastic bags. Get totes you like and leave them somewhere where you will spot them every time you leave the house.

Plan Ahead

If you’re someone who always has to throw out food that’s gone bad, that probably means you have to plan your meals more carefully. Buying only the things you will use before they go bad is a habit and you will get better at it over time, but start as soon as possible.

Buy in Bulk

Think of groceries you use often and in bigger quantities and buy them in bulk to reduce the packaging waste. Avoid buying single-portion items and individually packed foods whenever you can.

One of the best things that we can do as citizens to reduce our amount of plastic waste is simply by being smart with our consumption of water. Plastic bottles have unfortunately become a huge threat to our environment, looming as a non-biodegradable material that could cause a lot of problems in the future and present.

Want to be a conscientious water drinker? Here are some tips that will help you to reduce waste.

Use a Reusable Bottle

Reusable water bottles are an absolute life-saver. Not only will they help you to spot spending so much money on bottled water and other drinks, but they are also helpful for reducing the amount of waste that you produce due to their reusable nature.

Don’t Buy Bottled Water

Bottled water is an absolute no-no for those of us who are looking to be environmentally conscious. Not only do the plastic bottles in which they are sold work to pollute, but there are also plenty of more sustainable alternatives that are readily available.

Tap Water is Your Friend

As long as you live in or are traveling to a place with a modern sanitation system, drinking tap water is completely fine. The water that comes through your tap has been purified and sanitized to make it completely okay to drink, so take advantage of it!

Your kitchen sink might seem like an appropriate place to dispose of all kinds of waste, but that isn’t necessarily the case. While sinks, along with garbage disposals, offer a good alternative for taking care of certain things, there are some commonly-used kitchen items that cause big problems for your plumbing and the environment if they end up here.

Be sure to dispose of these kitchen items in a place that isn’t your sink or garbage disposal.

Coffee Grounds

Coffee grounds should never go into your kitchen’s drain, as they can easily coagulate and cause a blockage that can be extremely problematic. Try composting them if you aren’t going to throw them into your garbage bin, as they are a fantastic addition to your compost pile.

Cooking Oil

Cooking oil that is left over after preparing meals should never be put into the kitchen sink. Not only can it cause clogs, but it can also have a terrible effect on the environment if it finds its way into local waterways.

Flour

Have you ever made dough before? If so, you will probably understand why flour shouldn’t be put into your kitchen sink drain. The water which will combine with flour in the drain can cause a blockage-causing mass of mutant “dough” to form.

If you aren’t careful, it is way too easy to find yourself staring at a mountain of food waste on a week to week basis. Unfortunately, it can be far too easy to buy too much food and find yourself unable to eat it, contributing to a natural crisis that is related to our society’s overconsumption of goods.

Do you want to do your part in reducing or eliminating food waste? Check out these tips.

Don’t Overdo It On Produce

One of the easiest things to buy at the store that ends up going bad way too fast is produce. Fruits and vegetables are delicious and an essential part of a healthy diet, but don’t buy too many at once. You’ll have more than you can handle and they will become rotten and inedible.

Go to the Grocery Store Often and Buy Less

This might seem like a hassle, but you will find that making more frequent trips to the store and buying less will motivate you to eat everything that you have before buying more things. If you make one mega-trip per week, you’re sure to not eat some of the things that you bought.

Always Be Prepared for Leftovers

If you prepare too much food at a time, do not be shy about freezing it or putting it in the fridge! Not only will you not have to cook for a meal at a later date, but you will play a huge role in cutting down food waste.
