One of the best parts of the holiday season is food, and when it comes to festive snacks, no one does it better than Trader Joe’s. The grocery chain is well-known for its novelty products and seasonal treats, and many of this year’s holiday items have already started popping up on store shelves. If you love TJ’s as much as we do, read on to learn more about some of the best products to look out for this year.

Mini Gingerbread People

The practice of serving gingerbread for Christmas goes back centuries, and this year, Trader Joe’s is keeping the tradition alive with these miniature gingerbread cookies. Bite-sized biscuits decked out with bow ties and buttons are as adorable as they are delicious, while a white chocolate fudge coating on the back adds a touch of indulgence.

Jingle Jangle Pretzel Twists

Deck the halls with this seasonal spin on a classic treat. Oversized pretzels with a peanut butter candy coating are then sprinkled with chocolate candies and crushed Joe Joe’s cookies. The result is sweet, salty, and full of holiday cheer.

Candy Cane Chocolate Covered Almonds

Nothing says “Christmas” like some good old-fashioned candy canes. Chocolate-covered nuts are a Trader Joe’s specialty all year long, and this year, their holiday collection features a white chocolate version with bits of crushed peppermint candy in the coating. Perfect as a stocking stuffer or just for daily snacking.

For millions of families, meat has been a central part of holiday celebrations for generations, with over 40 million turkeys consumed in the United States on Thanksgiving alone. While we understand the comfort that can come from familiar traditions, a collective shift toward a more vegan way of life has been well underway in recent years, and it’s important to consider this when planning your holiday menu to ensure all of your guests have options to choose from. Read on to learn more about a few simple ways to make your holidays more plant-based.

Use Plant-Based Butter

From mashed potatoes to green bean casserole, butter is used to add richness and flavor to tons of holiday side dishes. While vegan meat substitutes still have a ways to go, many of today’s plant-based butters are so similar to the real thing that it’s hard to tell the difference. Just swap at a 1:1 ratio to give all of your side dishes a creamy indulgence — 100% dairy-free.

Choose Vegetable Broth

Soups, gravies, and stuffings often call for some kind of broth as a base, and while, traditionally, turkey or beef-based options are used as a default, switching them out for vegetable broth is an easy way to make your menu more vegan-friendly. For heartier dishes that could benefit from a more savory flavor, you can also try mushroom broth.

Try Coconut Cream

Whether your guests are vegan or have dietary restrictions around dairy, coconut cream makes an excellent alternative to heavy cream. With a smooth, rich texture and a subtle coconut flavor, it’s perfect for enhancing both savory dishes and seasonal desserts. Pop it in the fridge and chill overnight, then whip it with some powdered sugar and a splash of vanilla for coconut whipped cream.

We can’t all travel to Italy for the holidays, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy some panettone. The bread-like cake is light and filled with a variety of goodies, from candied orange peel to rum-soaked raisins, hazelnuts, and chocolate chips. Panettone isn’t the easiest cake to attempt, but if you fancy a baking project that will impress your friends and family this holiday season, this is it.

Ingredients:

Biga (pre-ferment)

  • 3 tablespoons warm water
  • ½ teaspoon active dry yeast
  • ½ cup bread flour

Initial Dough

  • 2 ¼ cups bread flour
  • 2/3 cup water
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 8 large egg yolks
  • 14 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed and softened

Final Dough

  • ½ cup + 1 tablespoon bread flour, plus more for dusting
  • 2 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla bean paste
  • 2 teaspoons fine sea salt
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed and softened
  • 1 cup roasted and skinned hazelnuts, chopped
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chunks
  • 2 6-inch paper panettone molds
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water to make an egg wash
  • Pearl sugar, for sprinkling

Instructions:

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, whisk the warm water with the yeast until dissolved. Add ½ cup of bread flour and mix with your hands or a wooden until the dough comes together. Cover the bowl with plastic and let it rest at room temperature for around 4 hours, until it doubles in size.
  2. Attach the paddle to the stand mixer. Add in the risen dough, as well as 2 ¼ cups of bread flour, 2/3 cup of water, ½ cup of sugar, and 8 egg yolks. Beat on low speed for about 2 minutes until just combined. Mix on medium-high speed until the dough balls up around the paddle and pulls away from the side of the bowl. Switch to the dough hook and gradually add the butter 1 tablespoon at a time with the mixer on low speed. Once fully incorporated, the dough should be smooth and shiny. Cover the bowl with plastic and let it rest at room temperature for 12 hours or overnight.
  3. Add the remaining bread flour and sugar to the dough in the bowl of the stand mixer. Attach the dough hook and beat on low speed until the dough is smooth and elastic. With the mixer on low, gradually add the 2 egg yolks and the vanilla paste until the dough is smooth and elastic again. Add in the salt and beat for 2 minutes. With the mixer on low, gradually add the butter 1 tablespoon at a time until fully incorporated and the dough is shiny and supple. Beat in the hazelnuts and chocolate until evenly distributed. Cover the bowl with plastic and let it rest at room temperature for 1 hour.
  4. Place the panettone molds on a large baking sheet. Scrape the dough out onto a floured work surface and cut it in half. Using a bench scraper and floured hands, gently shape the dough into two rounds, carefully folding the dough under itself.
  5. Carefully transfer the rounds, seam side down, to the panettone molds. Cover the molds with plastic and let them rise in a warm place for about 4 to 6 hours, until the rounds are 1-2 inches from the top of the mold.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F and position the rack in the center. Lightly brush the tops of the panettone with the egg wash, then sprinkle with pearl sugar. Bake for about 1 hour, until risen and the top is well-browned. Let the panettone cool completely, for about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Remove the panettone from the molds, cut it into wedges, and serve.

Even if you’re a seasoned pro at hosting, pulling off dinners during the holidays can be extremely stressful.

A survey conducted by bakery brand St. Pierre and analytics firm OnePoll found that on average, those who host Christmas dinner have around “three disasters” every year.

The most common mishaps?

Burning the turkey, burning the stuffing, undercooking the roast potatoes, making soggy vegetables, undercooking the vegetables, forgetting to serve the gravy with the meal, serving cold food, forgetting to supply vegetarian and vegan alternatives for guests, and forgetting the Christmas pudding.

“It’s safe to say the majority of us have experienced some sort of unplanned mishap at Christmas,” stated a spokesperson for St Pierre.

“A lot of the list of disasters are food focused because food is such an important part of the occasion and it’s something everyone wants to get right to impress others. No matter how bad it might feel messing up on Christmas Day, those who have experienced such a thing agree that it’s all part of making memories.”

Just remember: even the best chefs make mistakes in the kitchen. Practice making the dishes ahead of time and always have ready-to-eat foods as a backup.

We love going to the Disney Parks any time of year, but there’s an extra special magic during the holidays. The time between Halloween and New Year is full of fun events, parades, and shows, but it’s really the seasonal food that we look forward to more than anything. Disney is renowned for its culinary offerings year-round. Some snacks and drinks even have what can only be described as cult followings, so it stands to reason that their holiday treats would be no different. Here’s what we’re most looking forward to enjoying this year.

Peppermint Bark Bread Pudding

This dessert is available at the Pacific Wharf Cafe at California Adventure. It consists of a warm bread pudding topped with white chocolate sauce and whipped cream finished with a sprinkle of crushed candy canes. We’re definitely going to try to recreate this one at home.

Thanks-Mas Sandwich

For a savory option, try this Thanksgiving and Christmas-inspired sandwich from Jolly Holiday bakery at Disneyland. Layers of oven-roasted turkey, gravy, and cranberry sauce melt together between two slices of rustic bread.

Seasonal Schmoozies

Schmoozies! at California Adventure is our favorite place to go for an afternoon pick-me-up. The cafe offers coffee, shakes and smoothies, and their seasonal offerings are incredibly popular. This year, check out the Dulce de Leche Mickey Shake and Chocolate-Cherry Yule Log Shake.

When it comes to classic holiday foods and drinks, there may not be a more controversial offering than eggnog. Traditionally, eggnog is made with milk, sugar, cream, egg yolks and nutmeg and spiked with rum or brandy, though store-bought versions don’t usually contain alcohol. The ingredients may be simple, and although we ourselves are on team eggnog, preparing it from scratch can be tricky. For our holiday parties, we prefer to go with ready-made. Not all eggnogs are created equal, so choosing the right brand can make or break a holiday party menu. Here are the ones we’ll be serving this season.

Chobani Oat Nog

This plant-based alternative to eggnog contains the perfect amount of sweetness without being overbearing. It has a subtle oat flavor, which we were surprised to discover works quite well, and it’s lovely when topped with a little nutmeg.

Southern Comfort Traditional Eggnog

There was a time where we believed that the perfect eggnog didn’t exist, but then we tried Southern Comfort. Their take on eggnog is rich, creamy, and indulgent on its own, but made even better with a shot of the brand’s famous whiskey.

Califia Farms Holiday Nog

For a lighter option, try Califia Farms Holiday Nog. It’s made with an almond milk base, so it’s less creamy than eggnogs made with dairy and eggs, yet still offers all of the familiar flavor we look for.
