Sprinkle Some Scandinavian Magic with Signe Johansen

Norwegian cook and author Signe Johansen deserves more hype. The author of six food and drink books, she has written for publications like The Times, Sunday Times, Daily Mail, Stella, and Marie Claire. The co-founder of “Spirited Women”, she’s also a fan of cocktails and wants to encourage more women to try whiskey and other spirits.

Her candid approach to cooking and drinking, as well as her ability to speak the language of a chef, make for a unique blend that most people will find enjoyable. Her books include “How to Hygge” where she explores the culture of hygge, shares the secrets of Nordic living and inspires you to adopt these elements into your everyday life. Another favorite of hers is “Spirited” where she brings together fifty well-crafted cocktail recipes, all fuelled by a cook’s palate and a love of creative ingredients.

But when it comes to the cooking itself, she’s all about the basic ingredients. “Everything tastes better with butter,” she told the Guardian. “It is generally my fat of choice when cooking. I make my own, but I also usually buy some too – both salted and unsalted. I go through so much of it.”

“When I’m invited to dinner I always take some Nordic homemade jam – plum or wild blueberry,” she shared another tip. “I make a very punchy tart jam, not overly sweet, with a lot of flavour. People always love homemade jam.”
