Should You Use Fancy Cheese For Cooking?

There are many different kinds of cheeses out there, and they’re all incredible. Okay, perhaps that was a tad hyperbolic (This is coming from a cheese lover, by the way). Some cheeses are certainly better than others, but it’s more than just that. There are different qualities of cheese, varieties of cheese, and also styles of cheese. Fancy cheese, for instance, such as a fine Gouda, is a lot different than a basic block of sliced American. Some believe that the former shouldn’t be used for cooking, but is this true?

In Some Cases, Yes

The main question one needs to ask before using fancy cheese for cooking is whether or not its quality will be wasted. Take a delicious block of French Brie. The creaminess of this beautiful cheese will certainly be degraded once it gets added to some larger concoction, and we’d highly advise against cooking with it.

Special Circumstances

However, there are scenarios in which fancy cheese is actually perfect to cook with. This is true whenever the recipe is specifically tailored around the cheese itself. In other words, the cheese is the highlight of the recipe because it’s fancy, and all the recipe is doing is supported the cheese—instead of detracting from it.
