Pizza Sushi is a Real Thing Thanks to One Italian Restaurant

We already told you about sushi pizza, so it’s only fair that we also introduce you to pizza sushi. And no, surprisingly, they are not one and the same.

Pizza sushi is a signature dish prepared at the pizzeria La Fenice in the city of Pistoia, Italy. It was conceived by pizza maker Manuel Maiorano, who got the idea during the COVID-19 lockdown. He figured that the two most common things ordered by people are pizza and sushi, so he decided to combine the two and make one super dish.

According to Maiorano, he wanted to create something that could be eaten both hot and cold and keep a satisfactory taste in both cases. As part of the process, he swapped the sushi rice with traditional Italian bread focaccia that keeps its crispiness even when cold. After that, he figured he’ll combine sushi ingredients and pizza toppings but arrange them in the form of sushi.

The result was a mouthwatering dish that became a huge hit at the restaurant. People from all over Italy come to try it and see what all the fuss is about. And they mostly leave impressed.

As of now, there are four kinds of pizza sushi that you can get at La Fenice. The menu includes “Rosso di Sera,” which has salmon sashimi and a combination of cheese, almonds, and guacamole, “Marco Polo,” which comes with tuna sashimi and pistachio and chive mayonnaise among other ingredients, beef tartare-based “Radici,” and “Ebi,” that has prawns, corn, and stracciatella.
