If there is one meal that is synonymous with summer, it’s salad. The easy-to-assemble, no-cooking-required dish is what most of us live on during the hot months, but sadly, salad isn’t always as strong as we’d like it to be. If you find your greens aren’t going the distance, here’s how to help ‘em out.

Minus the Moisture

Moisture is public enemy #1 when it comes to keeping salad crisp. Make sure to pat dry all ingredients before adding them to your salad. One way to ensure that your leaves remain lively is by placing paper towels between each leaf when storing them in the fridge.

Location, Location, Location

Have you ever given much thought to where you are placing your salad in the fridge? Well, you should. Avoid the bottom section to prevent anything from dripping down and causing contamination. You also want to avoid the back of the fridge as it’s especially cold there.

Hold Off on the Goods

The key to a great salad is a mixture of textures — you want to include crispy, creamy, and crunchy. And you definitely don’t want them to get soggy! Prevent the dreaded mushiness by keeping things like cheese, seeds, croutons, and nuts aside until you’re ready to serve.
