A classic favorite of plant-based eaters everywhere, the veggie burger is a vegan staple. Nowadays, you can find dozens of frozen varieties at a typical grocery store, but it’s still healthier (and more fun) to make them at home. If you’re giving it a try for the first time, here are some tips you can follow to make it turn out perfectly.

Use the Right Beans

The bulk of most veggie burgers are legumes, but not all of them are as good of a fit as others. The best options stick together well but aren’t too hard or chewy. We recommend lentils, black beans, white beans, or pinto beans. The canned kind are the perfect consistency.

Bind it Up

Another important ingredient in any veggie burger is the binder, which helps hold everything together. Some great options include silken tofu, a flax egg (ground flaxseed mixed in water), aqua faba (chickpea water), or simply water can do in a pinch.

Season Big

Now, for flavor, you have to make sure not to be shy when it comes to seasoning. You’ll definitely want a healthy pinch of salt, but other than that, you can experiment with the spices and herbs that you love most.
