In our opinion, no dessert cannot be improved with a generous dollop of custard. But canned custard or custard powder don’t always deliver that rich creaminess we crave. Did you know it’s super easy to make custard from scratch?

Custard is basically sweetened milk and cream thickened with eggs. Add some aromatic vanilla and you’ve got yourself an indulgent pouring sauce perfect for topping any pie, crumble, or sponge pudding. Banish the powder from your pantry and follow our simple recipe for perfect custard, every time!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2½ cups full-fat milk
  • 5 egg yolks
  • 2½ tablespoons corn flour
  • ½ cup caster sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence

Instructions:

  1. Put the heavy cream and milk into a large pan and warm over low heat to just below boiling point
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, cornflour, sugar, and vanilla until well combined.
  3. Slowly pour the hot milk and cream mixture onto the egg mixture, whisking all the time.
  4. Wipe the saucepan clean with kitchen paper and pour the mixture back into it.
  5. Heat gently, stirring with a wooden spoon until the custard is thickened to your preferred consistency.
  6. Serve hot or cold with crumble, pie, or another favorite dessert!
