Cutting onions can be a tearful experience, but there are some tricks that can help you avoid the waterworks. Here are three tips on how to not cry when cutting onions.

Chill the Onion

Before you start cutting the onion, place it in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes. The cold temperature helps to slow down the release of the gas that causes your eyes to water, making it a lot easier to cut your onions.

Cut Under Running Water.

This is one of our favorites, and it works like a charm. Running water can help to wash away the onion’s gas, preventing it from reaching your eyes. To do this, cut the onion under running water or hold it under a running faucet while you chop it.

Use a Sharp Knife

A sharp knife cuts through onions cleanly, producing less damage to the cells that release the gas. This means less gas will be released into the air, reducing your chances of tearing up. This, too, is an excellent way to avoid the waterworks when cutting onions.
