Here’s How to Spot a Wonderful Watermelon

Watermelon could easily stake a claim for being the quintessential fruit of the summer. The sweet flesh goes perfectly in both cocktails and salads, and is, of course, delicious on its own. So how do you go about picking out a winning watermelon?

Patch Perfect

When searching for the sweetest watermelon, look for a big yellow patch on the rind as this indicates where the fruit was laying in the sunshine. The larger the patch, the longer the melon spent chilling—and ripening—on the ground, allowing all those sugars to intensify.

Webbing for the Win

Spider-Man isn’t the only one who has a webbing connection. In fact, the more webbing found on your watermelon, the better. The lines are caused by bee pollination, meaning that the more there are, the sweeter the fruit!

Come Over to the Dark Side

If you find a dark spot on your watermelon rind, you may be tempted to swap it for another—but don’t. Dark marks are actually a sign that the watermelon is deliciously sweet! The mark is caused by sugar seeping out—another indication that the pink flesh on the inside is sweet and juicy.
