Can You Open an Air Fryer to Check on Your Food While It’s Still Cooking?

We all have a habit of checking on our food while it’s still cooking, especially when experimenting with new recipes. This is pretty easy to do when you’re preparing food on a stove or inside an oven, but should you do it when you’re using an air fryer?

Air fryer experienced a huge boom in recent years because it offers a healthy alternative to deep-frying, allowing you to make your favorite comfort foods a little bit better. Not all air fryers are created equal, and their cooking time can differ, so you might be tempted to check on your food in the mid of the cooking cycle—but should you?

Stopping your air fryer isn’t a mission impossible because most models come with a pause button, but using the on/off button is also an option if yours doesn’t. You can stop or pause your air fryer to check on your food or shake it around the basket, but don’t leave the door open for a long time so the heated air wouldn’t escape, leaving your food undercooked.

Setting the automatic timer more than once instead of using the pause/stop button is also an option. For example, if the recipe asks you to cook food for 15 minutes and that seems like too long, do it for 10-12 minutes instead, check on your food once the timer expires, and go again if it’s still undercooked.
