A Guide To Eating Vegetarian and Vegan in the Philippines

If you’re vegetarian or vegan, people may have pulled a face when you told them you were going to Asia, asking you what on earth you will eat out there. For some reason, people get particularly nervous about the challenge of eating vegan in the Philippines. Here are just a small handful of dishes you can order almost everywhere.

Smoothie Bowls

Smoothie bowls are incredibly popular in the Philippines and they are completely vegan and completely delicious. They contain an abundance of rich, fresh fruits and nuts and grains. They cost a fraction of what they would cost at home and are a wonderfully satisfying start to the day.

Mango and Sticky Rice

Mango and sticky rice is a popular snack in Asia and unless you are one of the rare people who don’t like mango, we’re sure you’ll love it too.

Garlic Rice

No one makes garlic rice like the Philippines. It sounds like a poor excuse for a vegetarian meal but if I could, I would quite happily live off Filipino garlic rice forever.

Eggplant

Eggplants are common on Filipino menus. They tend to be marinated in a special soy based sauce and then fried. In many restaurants, you can order a couple of dishes for under a dollar. We suggest that the eggplant is one of them.

Tofu

Look out for tofu on the menu. Even if there is no vegetarian option for noodles, if there is tofu on the menu they can likely knock you up a vegan version. And it will probably be way yummier than you expected.

Vegetable Curry

Most menus in the Philippines will offer different curry options. There is almost a vegetarian choice and it’s usually packed with vitamins and will satisfy you completely.
