Fresh ginger is very healthy, calming to the stomach, and it has a delicious flavor that goes with nearly everything. It’s part of the base flavor profile of a ton of dishes, but you usually only need a little per dish and the fresh root doesn’t last forever. So, if you’ve got a little too much ginger on your hands, here are some great things to use it for.
Garlic-Ginger Paste
If you cook a lot of curries, you probably know that most of them call for garlic and ginger, or garlic-ginger paste. If you’ve been making little each time you cook or simply grating garlic and ginger separately into your pan, that’s fine, but there’s a better way. Make a large batch of garlic-ginger paste by grating a whole root and a whole head of garlic, or peeling and blending them. Then, place in an ice tray and freeze, and simply use an “ice cube” of paste each time you’re cooking.
Tea
Nothing is more soothing than some ginger tea made by pouring boiling water over fresh ginger. Add lemon, honey, and any herbs you like for extra soothing power.
Candied Ginger
If you like your sweets a little spicy, you can cut your ginger into strips and candy it. Candied ginger is a great mix-in for gingersnaps or Christmas cakes, or a great sinus-clearing snack to pop in your mouth on the go.
