Your Guide For Making Super Refreshing Aguas Frescas

Have you heard of Aguas Frescas? These Mexican drinks are thirst-quenching and they only use three ingredients: fruit, water, and sugar. In Mexico, they’re enjoyed as part of a meal and they’re pretty much flavored water. You can mix whatever fruits or vegetables you have on hand for these drinks. Here’s how to make them.

Choose Your Base Ingredients

Start with two cups of chopped fruit, which makes four to eight servings depending on the size of your glasses. Strawberries, peaches. watermelon, and mangoes all work well in the drink. Lime, sugar, and water is a classic combination and it’s a great base for other flavors. Chia seeds and avocado will make the drink creamier and nuttier. In addition to fruits, you can use grains, nuts, or rice.

Add Herbs and Spices

Herbs and spices add depth to the drink and they pair so well with tons of fruits. Watermelon and mint, cantaloupe and basil, grapefruit and rosemary, and pineapple are awesome combinations.

Blend With Lots of Water and Sugar

After you’ve got your base, puree everything in a blender with water until the mixture is smooth. Try a one-to-one ratio for sweet fruits and more water if the fruit is tart. One of the best reasons to make this drink at home is that you can control how much sugar goes into it.

Strain and Serve Over Ice

When the mixture is blended and smooth, use a fine mash sieve to strain into a pitcher. When you’re ready to serve it, pour it over ice.
