Your Colander Can Be Used For More Than Straining Foods

It’s always nice when our kitchen gadgets can be used for more than just what they’re intended for. Did you know that your colander can be used for so much more than draining pasta and vegetables? Here are five more uses for this kitchen tool.

De-Steamer For Herbs & Greens

De-steming herbs and greens is time-consuming and you can use your colander to make the process easier. Just turn the colander on its side and insert parsley through the hole facing upwards in the colander. Place the colander flat on the surface and slightly tug at the parsley—the leaves will fall onto the countertop and you’ll have parsley without the stem.

Cake Pop Holders

Just thinking about cake pops makes our mouths water and adults love them just as much as kids do. Next time you make them, instead of laying them on their sides where they can get dented, use the holes in your colander to let them dry.

Splatter Screen

Who doesn’t love bacon and eggs? But, while we love bacon, it’s messy to make as the grease ends up everywhere. To combat the issue, use your colander as a splatter screen while cooking bacon.

Steamer Basket

Steam broccoli, carrots, or peas with your colander. Place it over a pot and the handles of the colander will prevent it from falling into your pot.

Ricer For Mashed Potatoes

Your colander will work great as an alternative to a ricer for making creamy, fluffy mashed potatoes. Cook your potatoes and drain them in the colander and with a wooden spoon or spatula, press the cooked potatoes through the holes of the colander and into a bowl.
