Remember how picky you used to be about the fruit peel when you were a kid? Most of us wanted our apples, pears, and other fruit snacks to be peeled before we would even consider eating them, but we got over that as adults. The truth is, many fruits and vegetables don’t need to be peeled and it’s all about which habits we adopted. Ginger is among them. If you’ve been dreading peeling ginger every time you want to make something with it, we have good news—you don’t have to do that.

No Difference

Not peeling ginger won’t make any difference in the taste or texture of the plant. Due to its irregular shape, ginger can be very difficult to peel, and we were so happy to learn that it’s actually optional.

Other Options

Ginger peel is thin and you can freely leave it on, but just make sure to wash the root carefully under some running water. It’s even better if you scrub it with a soft brush a little bit.

The only time you need to peel ginger is if it’s old and wrinkly, but by that point it’s better to just get a fresh root as it will be much more delicious. Now that you don’t need to spend time peeling it, we’re sure you’ll use it up quickly so it won’t have time to get old.
