Okay, so beans on toast might not be a popular meal in most of the world. In fact, it may really only be the English that even consider it a meal. But in our opinion, they’re totally right. Just the same way that peanut butter and jelly or grilled cheese can be a meal, so can beans on toast. You just have to know how to prepare it correctly so that it turns out as delicious as possible. Here is our (admittedly very simple) recipe for the best possible beans on toast.

Ingredients

  • 2 slices of bread. This is not the time to try to get healthy or fancy. Just go with simple, supermarket white bread.
  • 1 tin of baked beans. Heinz in the only acceptable brand. No exceptions.
  • Cheddar cheese. The more mature, the better.

Directions

  • Toast your white bread in the toaster. Can you toast it some other way, like in a pan? Sure, but it goes against the spirit of the meal.
  • Crack open your can of beans, transfer them to a pot, and warm them on the stove on medium heat for no more than five minutes. Stir constantly.
  • Grate your cheddar cheese.
  • Now for the plating. Put your toast on the plate. Pour the warmed beans on top of each piece of toast. Finally, top both with a generous mountain of cheddar cheese. Wait for it to melt a bit before eating (if you have the patience).
