If you’re someone who loves to cook, chances are you’ll eventually want to pass down your cooking skills over to your children when the time comes. When they’re super young, you obviously can’t exactly offer them tasks that are too dangerous, but as they get older that starts to change. That being said, it can be hard to know when they’re ready to start spreading their wings. So, when is someone old enough to start cooking on their own?

Ultimately, the answer this question really just depends on the kind of food they’d be making. If all your child is doing is tossing a slice of cheese on a piece of bread, and heating it up in the microwave—well, there’s nothing wrong with them doing that at a young age.

But any type of cooking that either involves them heating up the stove or using a sharp knife requires some serious consideration. If you think they’re capable of doing these dangerous kitchen tasks in their early teens, it’s probably okay to let them as long as you’re monitoring them closely. However, we believe they shouldn’t be allowed to do it on their own until they pass the age of 14 or 15.
