A good night’s sleep is crucial to a healthy and happy lifestyle. It affects every aspect of our lives. While many of us suffer from lack of good quality sleep, did you know the foods we eat before bedtime can influence our sleeping patterns?

Here are 5 kinds of food and drink to avoid before bedtime if you want good quality sleep.

Cheese

You have probably heard the old saying that eating cheese before bedtime gives you nightmares. Well, in fact there might be something to that. Hard cheeses contain lots of tyramine, an amino acid that will keep you up and interfere with your sleep pattern.

Alcohol

While we often associate alcohol with drifting off to sleep, it actually disrupts our sleep cycles and prevents good quality rest.

Coffee

Drinking coffee occasionally after a night time meal is OK, but drinking coffee every afternoon or evening can damage your sleep. After 1 cup of coffee, the caffeine can stay in your system for around 10 hours.

Sugar

Eating sugary food before bed can act as a stimulant, which keeps you up and interferes with your natural sleep cycles.

Spicy Food

Spicy foods such as curries and burritos are also very hard on the digestive system. They can keep you up or prevent the deep sleep cycles.
