Did you know that there are tons of different types of mustard? With all of the different types, which one is actually the best? Mustard is a combination of ground mustard seeds and a type of liquid. While some mustard are sweet and some are spicy, it’s the liquid and seeds that differentiate the varieties of mustard. Here’s your guide to the top five types of mustards.

Yellow Mustard

Yellow mustard has the mildest flavor, with the color coming from turmeric that’s combined with yellow mustard seeds, vinegar, and water. It’s best on burgers, hotdogs, or in homemade sauces or salad dressings.

Dijon Mustard

This classic French mustard is made with white wine and brown and/or black mustard seeds. It’s stronger than yellow mustard and pairs well with sandwich spreads, vinaigrettes, sauces, or mayonnaise.

Spicy Brown Mustard

Often coarser than yellow or Dijon mustard, spicy brown combines brown seeds, yellow seeds, and spices like cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. It has a spicy, complex flavor and is best on hot dogs, hamburgers, and deli meat sandwiches.

Honey Mustard

Honey mustard is a combination of honey and mustard. Usually yellow mustard is used and it has a sweet flavor from the honey. Honey mustard is great in salads or with chicken nuggets.

Whole Grain Mustard

This mustard uses whole mustard seeds and it has lots of texture. It pairs well with roasted chicken or pork.
