Unripe tomatoes don’t exactly sound like the most appetizing thing out there. But they can be if you prepare them the right way. And they do that best in the Southern United States. In the South, unripe tomatoes are used to make the region’s classic fried green tomatoes. This dish is surprisingly delicious and can serve as a great appetizer, snack, or side dish. They also work well when put between two pieces of bread with some lettuce and condiments.

If you want to try this awesome dish, there is no need to book a ticket to Texas or Louisiana. You can easily make fried green tomatoes yourself, and we will tell you how.

Ingredients:

  • 6 medium unripe green tomatoes
  • 1 cup four
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 eggs
  • salt, pepper

Instructions

  1. Slice the green tomatoes into ¼ inch slices. You can discard the top and bottom of each tomato, as they will give you less suitable slices.
  2. Salt the slices and leave them rest between 30 and 40 minutes. This will help remove excess moisture.
  3. Prepare three bowls. Pour flour in one bowl and add a pinch of salt and a pinch of black pepper. Beat the two eggs in the second bowl. In the third bowl, combine cornmeal and breadcrumbs.
  4. Coat your tomato slices by dipping them in flour, then in egg mixture, and finally in cornmeal/breadcrumbs combination.
  5. Cover the bottom of the pan with vegetable oil and turn the stove to high heat. Place the dredged tomato slices in a pan and fry on one side until golden brown. Flip the other side and do the same.
  6. You can also fry the tomato slices by submerging them in hot oil. However, shallow frying is considered a better alternative as it allows the cornmeal to properly stick to the tomatoes.
  7. Take the fried green tomatoes out of the pan and let them sit for one minute on a paper towel to remove excess oil.
  8. Dip into mayo, Sriracha, or some other sauce, and enjoy.
