Vietnamese Coffee is a Bittersweet Treat

When thinking of Vietnamese cuisine, most people go directly to pho. That’s not necessarily a bad thing as the clear broth filled with noodles, meat, and herbs is incredibly tasty. But there is one other element of Vietnamese cuisine that should not be missed (and that can even be made at home). Using a drip filter, known in Vietnam as a phin, the iced coffee is a perfect balance between bitter and sweet. Here’s how to make it.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon ground coffee
  • 2 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup hot water

Instructions:

  1. Pour the ground coffee into a Vietnamese phin filter base. Place the phin filter strainer on top of the coffee.
  2. Pour the sweetened condensed milk into a glass.
  3. Place the phin assembly on top of the glass. Pour hot water into the phin filter. Place the phin filter lid on top and let the coffee drip through the filter into the glass.
  4. Add ice, if desired, and stir well before serving.
