Golden milk is a traditional drink from South Asia that has been used for its therapeutic properties for centuries. Turmeric is a magical spice that has so many benefits, mostly concerning anti-inflammatory effects. Turmerics benefits are greatly increased when cooked with fat, so traditionally whole cow’s milk is used. However, if you’d prefer a non-dairy version, then adding a teaspoon of coconut oil at the end can make a big difference. Including black pepper also makes the turmeric much easier to absorb. Once cooled, this drink can be stored in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 1 week. This recipe serves 2.

Ingredients:

  • 2.5 cups of milk
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 small stick of cinnamon
  • 5 black peppercorns
  • 1-inch piece of ginger
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Remove the skin from the piece of ginger and slice into quarters.
  2. Place all the ingredients in a large pan, give it a good stir, and bring to a gentle boil.
  3. Leave to simmer for 5-10 minutes, depending on how strong you want the flavors.
  4. Remember to stir frequently to ensure it’s all well mixed and there’s no sticking.
  5. Remove from the heat and leave to stand for 5 minutes, then use a strainer to pour it into mugs ready to drink.
