Where would we be without cooking tips? Probably struggling in the kitchen before deciding to get takeout.

We all know that cooking tips can do wonders for your kitchen skills but not all of them are actually as good as they claim to be. There are plenty of cooking tips that actually don’t make any difference or actually lead to a worse result.

A while back, Insider surveyed a number of professional chefs to find out which of the popular cooking tips and hacks actually don’t work. Here are the Top 5.

Oil in Water Prevents Pasta from Sticking

You probably heard this one before and maybe even used it. However, you actually shouldn’t. Oil will create a coating around the pasta and prevent the sauce from sticking to it. Simply add pasta to the boiling water, and it won’t stick.

Add Milk for Fluffier Eggs

There is no need to add milk if you want to make fluffier scrambled eggs. Instead, cook them at a low temperature and move them around often to create curds.

Flip the Steak Only Once During Cooking

This is another one of those cooking tips that has become incredibly widespread. The idea is that you should only flip the steak once during cooking, as moving it often causes it to lose flavor. The truth is that you can flip the steak as much as you want; you only need to get your pan or grill really hot.

Place a Raw Potato in an Over-Salted Dish

If you ever over-salted your dish, you probably tried to find solutions online and read that you need to place a raw potato in it to soak up the salt. Did it work? Probably not, because it doesn’t actually work. There reason is that potatoes will take on some salt, but they will also soak in the liquid, leaving you in pretty much the same place.

Vinegar Will Make Boiled Eggs Easier to Peel

Many people add vinegar to the water when boiling eggs, believing it will make them easier to peel. However, vinegar doesn’t do much. Instead, the ease of peeling depends on how old the egg is. Older eggs will be easier to peel than fresh ones.
