Marshmallows are a must-have item in every pantry. Imagine craving some S’mores only to find out that you don’t have marshmallows? That would be a disaster. The only way this could take an even worse turn would be if you have some marshmallows lying around but discover they are stale, dried out, or sticky—and practically unusable.

To avoid the first scenario, add marshmallows to your grocery shopping list and never take them off. The second scenario is also easily avoidable if you follow the tips for keeping marshmallows fresh for longer. Check them out below.

Keep Them in the Refrigerator

The easiest way to keep your marshmallows fresh is to simply keep them in the refrigerator. Store them in an air-tight container or Ziploc bag and sprinkle them with some powdered sugar (which will soak up any moisture). They’ll remain pristine for a couple of months.

Store Them in a Ziploc Bag Alongside Slices of Bread

If a refrigerator isn’t an option, then you can also get great results by storing them alongside a few slices of bread in a Ziploc bag. The bread will attract moisture and prevent it from damaging your precious marshmallows. Just make sure that the bag is then put away somewhere cool and dark. Also, swap the old bread with some fresh slices every now and then if you are letting marshmallows sit for longer.

Freeze Them

Finally, if you want to make sure that your marshmallows remain as fresh as they can be, simply freeze them. When stored in an air-tight container and frozen, marshmallows can retain their qualities for months. Just keep in mind that you shouldn’t overcrowd them as they might get flat.
