For some of us, a microwave sits on the kitchen counter, primed and ready to go, but often unused. If you’re wondering what uses it has, other than heating up leftovers, read these ideas for ways to put your microwave to good use.

Melting Chocolate

Many cake and brownie recipes call for melted chocolate, but doing this using the bain-marie method (submerging a heat-proof bowl in the hot water) can be fiddly and messy. To melt chocolate in the microwave, put the chunks into a microwaveable bowl, then put on low heat for 30 seconds. Remove, stir, and microwave again for 30 seconds. Repeat this process until the chocolate has melted through.

Cooking Vegetables

There is evidence that microwaving vegetables, as opposed to boiling them, retain more of their nutrients and flavors. To microwave green veg, such as broccoli, chop them into small pieces, place in a microwaveable bowl, add three tablespoons of water and then cover with a microwave-proof plate or board. Heat for three minutes on a medium setting, before taking out and testing the texture with a fork. If needed, microwave for another minute.

Cooking Sweet Potato

Wash the sweet potato, pat dry, and pierce serval times with a fork. Place it on a microwave-safe plate and heat for five minutes. Test with a fork, the fork should slide in easily. Microwave for another minute or two if needed, then remove from the microwave and serve with plenty of butter!
