The Caribbean is full of countries that are definitely underrated on the global gastronomic scene. On top of that, if there’s one country whose food scene that we absolutely adore in this region, it has to be Cuba.
A mix of African, Spanish, and indigenous influences have combined to create a gastronomy that is one-of-the-kind in the most-populated Caribbean country. Here are three Cuban dishes that you owe it to try.
Ropa Vieja
Ropa Vieja is the national dish of Cuba and a worldwide favorite that has grown to become popular outside of the country’s borders. Consisting of shredded flank steak that has been stewed in a tomato, onion, and pepper. This steak is served with black beans and rice, it doesn’t get much better than this dish.
Lechon Asado
Yes, this dish is a suckling pig that is roasted over a fire. While the image might turn you off, trust us when we say that it’s absolutely finger-licking good. Lechon Asado is typically served with mojo sauce, a citrus and garlic sauce that adds succulence to this classic dish.
Maduros
If you’re looking for a sweet Cuban dish, you have to try maduros. These fried sweet plantains are a popular side dish in Cuban gastronomy and provide the perfect antidote to all of the rich meat that is eaten in the country. Yum!
